Resource Jane Goodall and the Chimpanzees, by Betsey Chessen and Pamela Chanko

Medium Book

Annotation Asks the question How does Jane study chimpanzees? (i.e. What is the scientific method?) and then answers it using simple language and real photos of Jane and chimps.

Jane Goodall: Living with the Chimpanzees, by Annie Ortiz and Denise Ferrell

Book

Detailed bio from childhood to present with photos and maps. Touches on the importance of observing animals, and how she wrote about chimps in her journal.

Jane Goodall (Time for Kids), by William B. Rice

Book

Time for Kids book that somewhat resembles a magazine article: more text, many photos, some maps and other graphics. Very detailed.

Jane Goodall and the Book Wild Chimpanzees, by Bette Birnbaum

Illustrated book with simple text but lots of details about Janes work (observations and recordings), perseverance (waiting for chimps for days), and facts about chimps that Jane discovered.

Limitations/Comments Good independent read some of our highest readers could manage it, though its above most students. Great outline of scientific processes, light on details of Janes life. Long enough to work as a read-aloud over several days: first Janes background, then her scientific work with chimps. Would need to preview vocabulary. Could write an animal newsletter and/or record observations in animal journals like Jane did. Provides good examples of Janes perseverance, and the difficulties she faced as a woman scientist trying to travel and work alone. Also mentions apartheid, and K101 knows about Martin Luther Kingpossible connection. Would have to be a multi-day read-aloud. Ideal for read-aloud or Listening Center. Would have to make recording for Listening Center.

Medium Book

Book

Annotation Gorgeous illustrated book about Jane Goodalls life, with emphasis on a) observation and b) animal protection/environmental conservation. Based on Janes own writing (i.e. quotations are real). Adorable picture book (with some photos) about Janes life, mostly focusing on her childhood love and observation of animals. Short, concise biography with real photos and pretty simple text. Includes many key facts and a timeline running along the bottom of the pages.

Limitations/Comments Very good read-aloud.

Jane Goodall, by Lola Book M. Schaeffer and Wyatt Schaeffer

The Chimpanzee Family Book, by Jane Goodall

Book

Photographs of and real text about the first (and famous) chimpanzee family that Jane Goodall studied. Mentions her practices: Today I shall stay with Gremlin and her infant until dusk, writing down everything that they do. The writing is important because...scientists must keep careful records. Web site for Roots & Shoots, Jane Goodalls organization for young animal-rights activists. Includes information about kid-led environmental projects around the world.

RootsandShoots.org

Web site

Ideal for read-aloud or Listening Center. Would have to make recording for Listening Center. Reading level is appropriate for some of our highest readers. Appendix includes glossary and suggestions for further reading. Timeline may be confusing to some, but could also be beneficial for sequencing. Good to have a book actually by Jane. Very long, and somewhat complex language (intended for children, but older than kindergarten), but we could read parts of it aloud. Possible environmental volunteer project? Conservation or animal protection? Would love the students to hear from Jane herself.

JaneGoodall.org

Web site

Jane Goodall Institute web site. Includes pictures and videos of Jane working and talking about her work.

Big book that explains what scientists do in kid-friendly terms (A scientist is a person who asks questions and tries different ways to answer them.) and with kidfriendly examples of those practices (Are there this

Limitations/Comments Very cool real-life expert! Would have to work to arrange visit. Lots of logistical considerations. Can I get hermit crabs? Will the other K teachers be okay working with live animals? Caring for them? Will they use the same animals as us, or different (as NancyLee suggested)? If they do different animals, will the animal-centric lessons for K101 have to be significantly modified for them? If so, will I have time to do that? Would they be willing to do that?! Who will take care of the animals over spring break? Are all the kindergarten teachers okay keeping and caring for the animals for the rest of the year? And arranging for them to go somewhere at the end of the year? Great for talking about what scientists do (and what Jane did) in concrete steps: Did Jane question? Yes! Did she

Book and audiobook

Picture book about a hermit crab who goes searching for a new home after outgrowing his old shell. Simple rhyming text.

Limitations/Comments observe? Yes! etc. Will also be helpful for guiding our own practice. Not as realistic as some other books about hermit crabs, but we could talk about the difference between fiction and non-fiction. Also good for starting a conversation about why hermit crabs change shells. Possible textto-self connection: outgrowing something. Ideal for read-aloud or Listening Center. Would have to make recording for Listening Center. Includes sound words, which the class is learning about now in their mentor text. Could also discuss what makes an ideal home for a hermit crab. Ideal for readaloud or Listening Center. Simple rhyming text makes for a good companion text to other, more detailed books about hermit crabs. Some of our highest readers could manage this independently.

Short enough to hold kids attention. Intended for grades 1-4; could stop to discuss.

Hermit Crabs, by Tristan Boyer-Binns

Book

Non-fiction book about hermit crabs. Includes full-color photographs, diagrams, bolded words, headings, and other informational text features. Has a focus on keeping hermit crabs as a pet, but is full of important facts about the animals. Simple illustrated introduction to caring for three small pets, including hermit crabs. Includes facts about hermit crabs, tips for care, and black-and-white illustrations of children caring for them.

What Has Ten Legs and Eats Corn Flakes?, by Ron Roy

Book

Limitations/Comments creative spin on the ubiquitous story of a hermit crab who gets a new shell. Students can think about what sort of shell they would want if they were hermit crabs. For another unit, could use this to discuss the characteristics of a hero. Great for a read-aloud to answer some of our questions, though too long to read the whole thing. Will consult regularly as we learn more. Only one chapter of this book is about hermit crabs, but the language is simple enough that it will be a great addition to our KWL chart.
