Amanda Staman Curriculum Unit ART: Fourth Grade: Lesson on Native American Textiles

My students should be able to analyze the artistic characteristics of Native American textiles (Navajos), evaluate the cultural uses of textiles, and discuss how the historical culture change by the influence of the Spanish arrivals. My students should be able to create a small textiles that capture the geometric characteristics by weaving yarn on cardboard loom. Students will be able to use the knowledge that they have learned to accurately critique their final project and critique others in a professional manner. BIG IDEA: Historical influences brought on by the Spanish arrivals changed the cultural characteristics and uses of Native American textiles during the 19th century. The specific elements of art and principles of design that are applied to Native American textiles are based on the natural surroundings and cultural characteristics of the Navajo tribe.

Essential Questions: How did the Spanish conquistadors effect the change in artist characteristics of Native American textiles? Why did Native Americans create textiles for decoration in the 19th century and not in the 17th-18th century? How did Native Americans create textiles (tools and materials)? Which elements of art and principles of design are most dominant in a Native American textile? Differentiation in Lesson: PRE ASSESSMENT: Performance Based assessment: Students will create a small Native American textiles by weaving natural colors into a rhythmic pattern. They will use a traditional loom made from cardboard and yarn. In groups of four, students will create a skit of two Native Americans and two Spanish Conquistadors trading their decorative textiles for Spanish dye. They will have to use the small textiles they created as their barter. The skit must include artistic characteristics, cultural influences, and materials used. Post-assessment: Final Critique on students final loom project. Students will fill out a critique sheet about their work and three other students.
