Rose Yazzie Classroom Management Plan

Philosophy I believe that while working with students and parents it is important to have a plan set in place for various behaviors and procedures. Not onl is a solid plan a re!uirement but I also believe that having a strong preventative base is the foundation of a safe and engaging learning environment. "his should be the bulk of an classroom management plan because it will help inform students about what is e#pected of them. $ften time students will misbehave due to not knowing what the should be doing. Ne#t is the supportive techni!ues I will include in m class which will allow me to work with students as the practice how to accomplish the e#pectations set up at the beginnin of the ear. %astl I will discuss the interventions I will use to reach out to students that are misbehaving or acting out despite the preventative and supportice practices in place. I feel that b following this frame work I allow m class to be a caring and safe environment for students as the create goals and tr to accomplish them. M classroom management plan is sprinkled with various researchers and man different approaches that I feel create a cohesive learning environment for m students. In addition there are several pieces built in that allow the students to maintian a postive and open relationship with m self as the educator which I feel is also important in m classroom. I believe that all students have the right to an e#ceptional education that is differentiated and varied to meet the needs and interest of m class. "o reach this goal I have outlined the various pieces of m classroom and m plan to develop this area of the class.

Preventative &ith a strong devotion to preventative techni!ues set up in the class man of the behaviors that can

cause ma'or issues can be handled effectivel before the get out of hand. ( strong preventative class includes measures that create a safe learning environment as well as build a communit for the students )Charles *+,+- pg. *./0. 1fforts toward this ideal can include team building- engaging curriculum- and class procedures. 2elow I have listed several class procedures that I will use to create a classroom that seeks to prevent behaviors- which also means that this will be the main focus of m Classroom Management Plan. I believe that having solid classroom procedures set in place can help minimize student misbehavior and allow students an organized learning environment.

Preventative Procedures. "eam building3 "his will be built into communit circle as needed throughout the ear and we will focus on this especiall at the beginning of the ear to get to know each other. 4ome of the team builders I will implement include Me in a 2ag and other activities that allow us to see each other in man different aspects and not 'ust in the academic setting. 4ervice %earning3 I believe that b having students work collectivel on serving others the will also build a class communit and build important collaboration skills in the process. 5ive one3"ake one 2ucket3 &ith this bucket students will be able to compliment each other as students need it. I will ask each student to write a compliment or inspiring message on a card once at the beginning of the ear. (s students need a pick me up the can take a card to cheer them up- however the will need to give a compliment to put back in the bucket. "his will be self monitored b each student based on how the feel. 6or e#ample if a student is upset about a home situation the can grab a card then write a card to put in the basket- I think that it7s ver important for students to feel valued in the class so I think this preventative measure can help ease an frustrations that could lead to misbehaviors or bull ing. (ccording to Maslow7s hierarch of needs ),89/0 each student needs to feel a sense of love and belonging which I think

this bucket promotes as it is filled with notes from students and not the teacher the sense of belonging covers the whole class. (lso as 5lasser ),8:;0 states if these needs are not fulfilled students will usuall become resistant and disobedient in effort to get those needs met. Managing student work< I will have green drawers set up for each paper re!uired where students will submit completed work. (s students submit this work the will be sorting their papers in a precise wa . 4tudents will place their papers facing up and their names on the right )McCandless *+,/0. 2ins will be labeled with< math homework- reading logs- %iterac bag return and others as the are brought up for e#ample field trip permission slips. 4tudents will also have a "ake =ome draw where an work the can take home will be placed for e#ample corrected homework will be sent back home with each student. "his drawer will be blue to differentiate from the turn in paper. 4tudents should check this draw at the end of each week. "aking attendance< 4tudents will be in charge of moving their names from >absent? to >present? on the smart board. If school doesn7t have a smart board then I will use a cookie sheet with magnets labeled with student names. 4elf 4tarter3 (s students come in the will self start with a writing prompt or other activit that will review or build background for concepts covered in class. &riting prompts will cover the different st les of writing using our digital class pet "omm the "urtle. 4tudents will be writing to "omm who will be in different locations and times in histor . 4tudents will write lettersopinion pieces- informational pieces- poems etc in their writing 'ournals. Today Tommy is at the Grand Canyon exploring natural erosion. Write a letter to Tommy about how you think the force of water may have an effect on the canyon.
4cience 4tandard / $b'. * Indicator a &riting 4tandard ,+

@ournal &riting3 4tudents will have a blue 'ournal that is specificall for 'ournal writing with "omm and other prompts as brought up during class )2russo *+,*0.

Pencil 4harpening3 "o help minimize disruptive pencil sharpening or asking to pencil sharpen I will have a sharp bin and a to sharpen bin. (s students need a sharpened pencil the can take from the sharp bin and place their pencil in the to sharpen bin- however the can7t get up while I or a classmate is talking- rather onl when it is time to write )McCandless *+,/0

%ining up3 "o help keep class line up in order I will have table numbers written on Popsicle sticks. I will first get all students read to go- put awa books etc- then I will use Popsicle sticks to call each table to line up. I feel this wa students will all get a chance to be the first ones in line or take turns at the end of the line )Mugleston *+,/0.

(ttention getter3 "eacher will clap twice then raise hand. (ll students will raise their hand to signal the are read for instructions. It will have both an auditor and kinesthetic signal for students which I feel is ver effective )Mugleston *,/0.

"ransitions3 as students transition (fter recess3 when students return from recess we will do a class stretch to help students release an left over e#citement from recess so the can focus on the ne#t sub'ect. "hese stretches will include headAshoulder rolls- eas oga poses- and deep breathing.

walking in hall3 BY=6"Y is an acron m we will discuss the first da of class to help remind students to Beep Your =ands and 6eet "o Yourself )Classmates *+,/0. I feel that setting this e#pectation in place can prevent man hallwa misbehaviors.

2athroom3 "he onl times students will not be able to use the restroom is during instruction or guided practice unless it is an emergenc . "o help prevent students using the restroom as an escape from assignments I will allow students one bathroom break in the morning- before lunchand one in the afternoon -after lunch. "o help monitor this- each student will have an (M and a

PM pass. (s the use the restroom the will place their pass on the plastic strip holder and when the return the will place it in the bathroom bucket located ne#t to the door where it will sta until the end of the da )Proteacher *+,/0. "he plastic strip allows me to see who is in the restroom and signals to other students the will have to wait until that person comes back since onl one person is allowed at a time. lockersAcubbies3 4tudents will put awa their belongings during the first few minutes before school. (ll backpacks will be placed in their lockers. 4tudents will have seat pockets where the will keep reading books- homework folders and 'ournals. =omework folder3 4tudents will have a homework folder that the will use to store spelling and vocabular words in plastic sheet protectors. "he will also have pockets in this folder that the can use for storing math homework and other notes from the school )Mugleston *+,/0 Reading logs3 4tudents will be e#pected to write about the reading the are doing at home. "hese reading logs will be kept in the student7s homework folder to be completed after school. In the morning the will be turned in. "hose who complete the log will get a chance to participate in book chats. 4electing students for responses3 I will be using an updated version of Popsicle sticks with names. 4ince I plan on having m phone with me to monitor time etc I will be using the free app Name 4elector from i"unes. (fter inputing m class in once I can randoml select students for responses. I can easil switch each student onAoff based on attendance of the da . )&alsall (cadem *+,/0. Clean3up time3 "o help save m voice and hands from signaling students for ever thing I will be implementing music as a signal for students to clean up. I will be using , minute of >New Ca ? from &ill I.(m.. I will cut the song from +<++3+<*+ and then repeat the song. 4ince there is a down beat the student will be able to identif when the need to be done and back in their

seats. 6ire drills3 "his will be practiced the first da of school and I will have a backpack ne#t to the door with an updated role as well as a first aid kit. If a bag is provided b the school this will be used in place of m own bag. 4tudents will practice walking outside and lining up alphabeticall with their last names. 6or e#ample Rose Yazzie would be last since Yazzie starts with a Y. 5uest 4peakers3 If there is a guest speaker I will ask of all students to put awa an thing on their desks and give the speaker "riple Coubles meaning e es- ears- and knees will be facingAfocused on the speaker. Phone Calls3 If there is a class phone supplied b the school I will have a phone call sign that will be placed up front to remind students of absolute silence while I talk on the phone if it rings during class time. Phone Calls =ome3 If a student has to call home during the school da the will use the phone during recess or independent working time- not during instruction or guided practice. "rash3 4tudents will have the freedom to throw trash awa during independentAgroup work but never during instruction or guided practice. "o help minimize wondering in the class there will be at least trashcans in the class- one in the front and one in the back. communit circle3 %unch time procedures3 6or students that bring home lunches there will be a class bo# set up if the are bringing lunch from home where the can place their lunch in this bo#. 4ince this will be a class 'ob a student will carr the bo# down for lunch and return it back to class after lunchAlunch recess. "his will help minimize lost lunch bo#es and wondering in the halls during lunch to return bo#es. Crinks3"o help make this a less disturbing class procedure I have decided that students will be

using water bottles that the will keep at their desks. 4tudents will be allowed to fill their bottles at the beginning of the da and after lunch as directed b the &ater Cirector. Morning routine3 &e will take the first *. minutes of the school da to submit papers- write in our 'ournals and go over communit circle. 4tudents that completed their log will get the chance to meet their book club and discuss what the wrote about. "his social motivation to read will allow students to discuss what the are reading and can help build comprehension )4wan *+,/0. 4tudents who did not complete the log will use this time to readAwrite about their book. Papers3 * minutes @ournal3 . minutes Communit Circle3 ,+ minutes 2ook Club3 . minutes Communit Circle34tudents will reflect on how the feel in school- I will ask them to think in their heads however I will call on a few students. "he should use the frame<Yesterda I- "oda I will-. Communit Circle will also include announcements- 4chedule for the da - team builders. I feel that the class schedule can help students know what is e#pected of them toda with the current schedule. (ccording to &ong )*++D0 teachers should have a written script of what the da will look like and what students will be doing toda . 1nd of da routine3 &e will take the last ten minutes of the school da to clean up and gather an papers that need to go home. 4tudents will also complete their 'obs at this time if applicable. 4tudents will also be coloring in their class marbles )Classmates *+,/0. Esing the clip s stem the will color their marble the color the landed on for the da . 6or e#ample- 4ofia lands on blue for e#cellent she will color her marble blue for the da . 4tudents will keep this in their homework folder so it will not get lost throughout the da . Papers G new homework3 *minutes Clean up3 , minute (s Charles )*+,+ p.*.90 discusses students should know what is e#pected of them and there should be time spent into teaching them how to abide b these e#pectations. I feel that creating class rules and class 'obs can help students realize these e#pectations and feel comfortable in the class setting. Class rules G e#pectations3 >picture this?(t the beginning of the ear we will spend time working on class rules which will be made up b the class as a collective. I will also have students help model e#pectations of behaviors in class. &e will be using our class for our graphics. I will be referencing work from Picture "hisH )4mith *+,+0 which will allow me to provide models of levels of e#pectations. 6or e#ample if the class is chatting I will ask them to chat like a four- four being whispering to each other rather than a one. ( one would show an image of a student shouting. Class e#pectations will be created for not onl students but also for m self as the teacher. Morrish )*++D0 describes this as an important discussion where ou talk about the importance of following instructions to promote a learning environment where students can focus on learning once the procedures are learned. Class @obs3 1ach week students will alternate class 'obs. "hese 'obs include< P.1. Item check outAin- pencil sharpener- suppl manager-

(M @obs Cate checker3 "his student will write the correct date on the board.

Curing the Ca P.1. Item check out3 students will check out items from their classmate at the start of recess not during class. "he will also

PM @obs

2athroom Pass3 "his student will make sure that ever one who has used the bathroom throughout

Paper Manager3 "his student will be responsible for returning the pass back papers that have been corrected to the blue drawers. e!uipment to the P.1. Checker. P.1. Checker will keep a log of

the da gets their passes back at the end of the da .

"he will also be responsible for items checked out. checking submitted work.

Pencil sharpener will be responsible for sharpening all the

4uppl Managers3 "here will be to be sharpened pencils at the &ater Cirector3 Cecides which team tables will go first as the fill their water bottles using the table Popsicle. "he will also at least two suppl managershowever more can be added as needed. 4tudents will be responsible for passing out end of each da .

monitor students as the fill their supplies as needed throughout bottles to minimize misbehaviors. the da - for e#ample passing out whiteboards.

%unch 2o# Caretaker3 "hese two students will be responsible for bringing the lunch bo# to the cafeteria and bringing it back to the class after lunch.

Supportive techniques 4upportive techni!ues will be introduced when the preventative techni!ues are not engaging students or when students are completing behavior as e#pected.

Class bo#3 I will use this bo# for suggestions or comments from students. I think that it is important for studentIs to be heard although I understand that this can also be intimidating so I will use the bo# to keep it anon mous or at least private for students that want it. (ccording to 5lasser )*++, p. .90 a simple phrase can help set the tone for this supportive frame of an class >I7ll listen?. I feel like as educators this phrase isn7t said nearl enough however is ver important to build the support that students need when the preventative frame doesn7t work. "his can also help build up rapport with students toward the teacher.

using the class clip s stem if a student has to move their name down I will have them reflect on what caused them to move the clip down )Classmates *+,/0. I want to make sure students understand that the are not bad however the situation or behavior is not acceptable in the class. "his reflection will let them think about how the can change that behavior and differentiate it from them as a behavior the can change. "he student will fill out a form each time their name is moved down. "he will write what the did and how the could change it. "his approach doesn7t ask students wh which can sometimes cause students to react defensivel )Charles *+,+ p.*.;0. "his approach instead states the problem and asks students to focus on correcting it.

&hile the previous techni!ues focused on individual approaches I will also list a few that I believe would be beneficial for the whole group approach. Repeating behavior3 (ccording to Morrish )*+++0 asking students to repeat the behavior until it is acceptable can work wonders without focusing on what students were doing incorrectl . "his falls under supportive because while students aren7t able to complete this independentl as the educator we step in to support them in achieving the appropriate behavior. 6ollowing Marshall )*++D0 asking students reflective !uestions can help support them as the

tr to reach class e#pectations. I think of it as a sort of think aloud- asking students what the would do if the wanted to be successful etc allows students to think with ou as the modif their behaviors. I also like that this approach gives the student choice and allows them to reflect without teacher intervention. I also feel that the class e#pectation guides can be a supportive techni!ue because while reflecting students can gauge to what level the are following instructions etc. ,39. I feel that the visual is an important support as well. I also feel that at this point classroom set up can be a supportive techni!ue allowing the students teams to work with collaborativel and allowing the teacher to maintain pro#imit . (ccording to @ones )*++D0 looping around the room allows the teacher to interact with man students in a short time and keep students engaged in instruction or the activit . $ffering choices can be an important supportive techni!ue because students will be able to sta involved and have a sense of power in the classroom )5laser ,8;80.

Intervention Techniques Intervention or redirection techni!ues are to be used when students misbehave )Charles *+,*- pg. *;*0. (lthough it seems like this would make up the ma'or portion of this Classroom Management Plan- it actuall will be the last tier to m management plan. I agree with 5inot ),8D,0 in the position that when redirecting student behaviors ou should focus on what needs to be done. "he focus is not on the student but instead on what needs to be done correctl . (s a newer teacher I feel that the advice given b 5lasser ),8;80 is worth it7s weight in gold. 5lasser states that rather than listening to e#cuses given b the student the educator needs to focus on what can be done to resolve the issue or situation. "hese two techni!ues reall fall

hand in hand in m opinion. I feel that if ou are focusing on the behavior the student should feel the have to provide e#cuses and as the educator ou can easil decide to not accept e#cuses. (void asking &=Y. I feel that this was repeated because simpl asking wh is asking for an e#cuse while asking how can we fi# this- what are ou doing will allow the student to reflect and form a plan of how to achieve the appropriate behavior. Coloroso )*+++0 discusses restitution as a wa for students to redirect their behaviors. I believe that a few of the previousl mentioned steps also fall into this categor . 6or e#ample the class clip reflection allows student to follow the basic outline given b 5ossen )*++90. I also reall appreciated Cook 7s)*++90 approach on page *;;. the outline she provides is ver e#plicit and works well with students that have a Neurological 2ased 2ehavior. I feel that this outline could also be great for students in the class that have various emotional issues. "he first step is to state the behavior- then inform students how to correct the behavior- follow up with praise if the follow directions. Cook even outlines steps for when students don7t compl that include waiting for them to calm. I feel that this la er of redirecting can be beneficial for students with constant behavior concerns and can eliminate student resistance and reacting defensivel .

In conclusion I feel that this plan is a general outline of m guide for the ear however as with each class things will change to fit the needs of the students in m class. I plan to modif m plan as the needs of students change and use varied techni!ues to fit students of all backgrounds.
