Definition
Social media has been around since humans began to communicate.

Interaction among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks.
Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein define social media as "a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content. Furthermore, social media depend on mobile and web-based technologies to create highly interactive platforms through which individuals and communities share, co-create, discuss, and modify user-generated content.

Different types of social media: 1. Collaborative projects (for example, Wikipedia, Google Drive, Dropbox) 2. Blogs and microblogs (for example, Twitter, Instagram) 3. Social news networking sites (for example, Digg and Leakernet) 4. Content communities (for example, YouTube and DailyMotion)

5. Social networking sites (for example, Facebook)


6. Virtual game-worlds (e.g., World of Warcraft) 7. Virtual social worlds (e.g. Second Life)

Why it is Effective and Cost - Effective ?


1. Overall: Increased followership on social media sites and increased brand share of voice on social media platforms vis--vis competitors 2. Ease of access, portability of technology, simplicity, and freedom of

speech and expression.


3. Can interact and engage with each other through a mere web presence without having to meet someone in person. 4. Customer service improvements: Reduced time of responding to customers and improved customer satisfaction 5. Efficiency improvements: A large number of customers / candidates reached at a lower cost compared to traditional advertising/ communication media, marketing campaigns executed faster, and faster ability to hire.

How to integrate social media in teaching & learning?


1. Blogging : a. eg. Blogspot, Wordpress b. Writing blogs are great for sharing and learning from others, write reflection of lesson, story sharing, facilitating connections among people, philosophizing, and much more.

c. It can be a place to list assignments, a site for student interaction and discussion, and even a location for structuring and hosting an entire course.
d. experts can easily contribute tips, thoughts, and best practices to a large community of learners. e. manage class discussions out of class and provide additional information

4. Micro-blogging / Micro-sharing : a. eg. Twitter b. Can share our thoughts, ideas, information with others and to learn or get inspired by others c. Use Twitter as a backchannel during conferences, using tags, adding depth to presentations and discussions d. Can learn something new several times a day and stay connected with people that form the most valuable network

5. Photo Sharing : a. eg. Flickr, Picasa (photo), Instagram b. can share photos (albums) that we put together to supplement different aspects of my curriculum. 6. Presentation Sharing : a. eg. slideshare (presentation), b. Students can create and post their PPTs for class, and students can comment on them. It is an excellent tool for sharing ideas. 7. Video Sharing : a. eg. Youtube, Teachertube, Dailymotion b. Educators need a safe and secure place where the students can participate in the social aspect of video sharing and engaging students with video responses c. Great instructional videos on how to use certain application, etc.

a. eg. Google Docs, Dropbox, Wikispaces


b. we can easily share or publish. We also can use Forms to easily create surveys and bring the data into the spreadsheets. Beside that we can also use it to get distance learners to collaborate.

Great way to interact, ask questions, answer questions, start discussions and network d. helps learners put a face with a name and learn personal fact about other learners a fantastic way to find other people who are interested in what you want to learn. 11. Collaboration Environment : a. eg. Moodle b. can use this Open Source course management system for training courses. It has interactive components, including chats, forums, wikis, workshops, grading, files download.

c. can use for group coaching, including enrollment methods etc.
