1. TEKS (113.20 Social Studies 8th Grade H82B) The student understands individuals, issues and events of the Civil War. The student is expected to: explain causes of the Civil War, including sectionalism, states rights, and slavery, and significant events of the Civil War, including the firing on Fort Sumter; the battle of Antietam, Gettysburg, Vicksburg; the announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation; Lees surrender at Appomattox Court House; and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. 2. Big Understandings The Civil War was a pivotal point in American History. The Civil War pitted North against South, fathers against sons and brother against brother and eventually former masters against former slaves. The Civil War cost America 6 million lives in todays numbers after four long years of fighting. Students will be able to understand why America looks the way it does today. Students need to know that when dealing with conflict resolution that there are some viable alternatives that we use today when dealing with conflict. Student need to understand how to prevent this from ever happening again.
Objective We will be able to explain causes of the Civil War, including sectionalism, states rights, and slavery and significant events of the Civil War.
3. Assessment Evidence - Students in groups are able to explain sectionalism, states rights and slavery. - Students in groups are able to identify causes of sectionalism, states rights and slavery. - Students individually won the jeopardy challenge, the history bingo game and wheel of history. - Students individually will answer a 10 question work sheet on sectionalism, states rights and slavery. 4. Opening Hook I want everyone to stand in the middle of the classroom. I want each student to hold hands with a partner. I will say out-loud a controversial issue in our time and I want you to pick aside. Those students that support the issue (pro) Go to the right. Those students that are against (oppose) Go to the left. If the students have opposing views and cannot go either direction we will have a debate to resolve the differences. I will do this several times until everyone we all meet in the middle of the classroom. I will show a 2 minute video of the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. 5. Instructional Strategies/Student Activities Input: - Students will fill out a K-W-L chart on their prior knowledge. - Teacher will fill out a K-W-L chart on students prior knowledge. - Students will work in small groups on their activity packets and teach each other. - Each small group will use the computer in the classroom to answer question 8 in the activity packet. - Teacher will start the video of the Civil War in 20 minutes. - LD students will be given extended time to complete assignments. - LD students will be provided lower-readability material to cover content. Modeling: - Teacher will use projector to fill out the K-W-L chart. -Teacher will canvass the classroom for questions and answers. Guided Practice: - Review the issues that caused sectionalism. - Review the issues that caused slavery and states rights. - Teacher asks questions of the small group and has them right it down individually. - Teacher will work one on one with LD students at the front of the classroom. CFU: - Observe students actions in small groups and see if students are participating in guided discussion. - Observe LD students and answer questions in a student /teacher one on one. Independent Practice: - Give students random questions on the Civil War and see if students get right answer, show answer on PPT.
