Pre-assess:

My pre-assessment consisted of a conversation with my cooperating teacher and my field observations. During this time the students have been taking their WKCE and in class have been participating in review games and other non stressful activities. In the conversation with my CT we decided that a vocabulary review game would help students practice spelling and identify definitions. I created the list of vocabulary words based of terms I have heard them use in class and research on vocabulary that 5th graders should know. I have seen very little student writing since I am there usually for math and science, therefore I am going of what my CT has informed me.

Materials Needed:

Procedures:
(Include time allotments) Steps for instruction (30 mins) Introduction/Demonstration (5 mins): Today we will be playing a vocabulary bingo game in order to review definitions and spelling of words. I will be giving all of you a blank bingo card that looks like this (show students an example in the overhead). I will also provide you with a list of vocabulary words. It is your job to fill in the spaces on your bingo card with these words in whatever order you wish. (Do a few on overhead to show students). The rules of the game are simple, once you have filled in your cards with the words we will start. I will then say the definition of a word and it is your job to locate it on your bingo card. You can win bingo by having all 5 spaces covered in a row, column, or diagonally. If you think you have won, you can call out bingo and then I will ask you to read to me the words you have covered. Any questions? Practice/Participation (20 minutes): Hand out the bingo cards and vocabulary list, tell students they have a 2 minutes to fill their cards at a volume zero (no talking). They are to do this individually. Give students a warning when time is almost up. Start by picking out a note card from the pile and read only the definition- provide students with an example is applicable. Read the definition twice clearly. Repeat this step until a student calls Bingo. Double check to make sure student has the right words by having them read out loud the words they have. If there is more time, allow students to clear their boards and play again. Closure (2 mins): To close up the activity inform students that when they are reading and cross an unknown word a good technique to use is the context, how is the word being used, what are some relationships. Also knowing parts of the word might be helpful in decoding. Understanding vocabulary helps us deepen our understanding when reading and writing.

Strategies for students requiring additional assistance: I will be assisting students by first demonstrating how they are to fill up their cards and by handing them the bingo cards already premade. Also by handing the students a vocabulary list of words I am evening out the playing field and all students have the same probability of winning. As I am reading out the definitions to words I will make sure to read them twice so that all can hear, I will also be providing an example if possible to give students a concrete example of the word being used in context. 2013FA
