Investigation Underway to Identify Source of Cyanide Poisoning

Johnson and Johnson Teams with Authorities to Protect and warn Public Chicago (October 1, 1982) In the greater Chicago area five people have been found dead, one is in serious and unstable condition, and two others are in fair and stable condition at Good Samaritan Hospital. The cause of death has been determined by authorities to be cyanide poisoning that had been put into Extra-Strength Tylenol capsules. Johnson & Johnson is taking every step possible to prevent any further tragedies by partnering with authorities. 4.7 million of the capsules with the lot number MC2880 have been recalled. Based on information from the medical examiner, the case is being investigated as homicide. Authorities also believe the cyanide was introduced at some point after the capsules left our McNeil Consumer Products plant in Fort Washington, Pa. Lawrence G. Foster, spokesman and owner of McNeil heard from the medical examiner in Illinois that the capsules had been pried open and placed back together. Chief toxicologist with the medical examiners office, Dr. Michael Schaffer explains, It is impossible to tell when the tampering occurred. We tested three capsules from each container of 50, and one of the three from each contained cyanide. The spokeswoman from the Good Samaritan Hospital assures that coroners tests are under way. She informed us that the two persons are in stable condition after they had taken Extra-Strength Tylenol within the last 24 hours. Doctors identified their symptoms of dizziness, vertigo, and other signs of cyanide. The Cook county medical examiners office discovered two of the poisoned bottles had been bought in separate stores. Our primary concern is for our consumers and the public at large.
