Criteria- Standards of Judgment Aesthetics- The philosophy or study of the nature and value of art Art Criticism- An organized approach for studying a work of art Aesthetic Experience- personal interaction with a work of art Description- A list of all the things you see in the work Analysis- The discovery of how the principles of art are used to organize the art elements 7. Interpretation- An explanation of the meaning or mood of the work 8. Judgment- The degree of artistic merit 9. Literal Qualities- The realistic qualities that appear in the subject of the work 10. Formal Qualities- The organization of the elements of art by the principles of art 11. Expressive Qualities- Those qualities that convey ideas and moods 12. Imitationalism- Focuses on realistic representation 13. Formalism- places emphasis on the formal qualities 14. Emotionalism- When a work of art arouses a response of feelings, moods, or emotions in the viewer 15. Art History Operations- A four step approach for organizing the way you gather info about a work of art 16. Description- What do I see? Analysis- How is the work organized? Interpretation- What message does this artwork communicate to you? Judgment- Is this a successful work of art? 17. This is called emotionalism. 18. This is called imitationalism. 19. The steps are description, analysis, interpretation, and judgment. 20. This allows viewers to learn more about the artists who created the artwork.
