History of Siddhartha Gautama A.K.A Buddha


Founder of Buddhism Buddha lived in northern India

He lived in the 500s and 400s B.C.


Buddha was born in Nepal, India on the border. He lived in a castle and married Princess Yasadhara. When he was about 30 he had 4 visions. In the 1st vision he saw an old man. The 2nd he saw a sick man. The 3rd he saw a corpse. In the 4th a wandering holy man.

The 1st 3 visions convinced him life involved aging, sickness, and death. It made him think to leave his family and seek religious enlightenment.

Buddhism
Celebrations-The most important holiday in Tibet is Losar which celebrates the Tibet New Year. Its celebrated in February. Dharma day marks the beginning of the Buddhas teaching. The word darma can be translated as truth and is the term used for the path of enlightenment or the Buddhist teaching. Sangha Day- Also known as for fold assembly day/Magha Puja Day. Kithina-Which originated 2500 years ago it celebrates the largest alms giving ceremony of the Buddhist year.

Beliefs
The Four Noble Truths 1. The truth of suffering 2. The truth of the orgin of suffering 3. The truth of cessation of suffering 4. The truth of the past to cessation of suffering Karma-Our past actions either affect us positively or negatively. Jesus through Buddhist eyes-Ajahn Candasiri a senior nun at the Amaravati Buddhist Monastery in Hertfordshire. The Buddhist universe-The great tragedy of existance From a Buddhist point of view.

Worship

Buddhist can worship at home or at a temple. You dont have to go to a temple and worship with others. In their home they often have a room set aside with a statue of Buddha, candles, and a incense burner. Buddhist temples are designed to symbolize the four elements: fire, air, earth, water, wisdom
