Vertical Math Team Meeting Date: May 18, 2012 Attendance: 6-12 group (Shannon TerMeer, Martha Roeloffs,

Brandy Goodwin, Josh Modert, Bruce Esterline) Albert Lombard joined us for consult for the morning as well. Middle School Topics Covered and Actions Accomplished The middle school is extremely interested in Connected Math (CMP) o CMP is recommended by the authors of CCSS as a very good link to fulfilling the CCSS curriculum as intended. It is investigation heavy and takes a constructivist approach. This is fairly cheap to implement, but requires training for teachers. Brandy has requested the following books to use next year in 8th grade: "Moving Straight Ahead", "Variables and Patterns"," Kaleidoscopes, hubcaps, and mirrors", "Looking for Pythagoras", " Shapes of Algebra", "Thinking with Mathematical Models". These books are inexpensive and run around $10 a piece. Brandy took her 8th grade curriculum map and cross-referenced the units to the Delta Math Algebra I readiness standards. She then ordered the units chronologically placing those highlighted units first to be sure the high leverage content is hit and hit well. Some major concerns/questions from the middle school were: o 8th grade advanced math for next year (they have complete 1a) should they continue on and do 1b and 1c with Sue and begin Geometry at the High School or go into 8th grade CCSS with the rest of their peers? o Should we not track until 8th grade? o Should we continue to track at all levels at the middle school? Delta Math o New screener for Algebra I readiness is available now . We should give this in 7th grade before we schedule to determine advanced 8th grade class o Give Algebra readiness screener at the end of 8th grade and perhaps use it to determine who should be in the Algebra I plus course o Could Algebra I plus use this as a true intervention? o remember that we should be using the delta math quick check screeners o For high school use we will need to manually enter the kids under the middle school site o Use the Pre-Algebra Readiness screener in the beginning of 8th grade to determine what should be done on the MEAP review (remember Albert said there is a pretty good correlation between the delta math readiness scores and the MEAP scores. Then give the Algebra I readiness screener in the spring o For sixth grade MEAP review in the fall, use the 6th grade readiness screener. This will also be useful to identify gaps in the CCSS that the 5th graders coming to us as sixth graders will have (plan-screen and see where they are at and then do our best with the sixth grade CCSS next year)

Shannon said that the 7th grade MEAP review has already been outlined by the sixth grade teacher, but 7th grade teachers should also screen with 7th grade readiness for MEAP review to be sure that our kids do in fact have the high leverage content covered before they take the test Philosophical Question on Placement o Is it wise to simply place kids in the advanced class solely on test scores? Implementation Plan for the middle school and high school for 2012-2013 6th grade- screen with Delta Math 6th grade readiness screener to see what holes will need to be patched an then do the best you can with the 6th grade CCSS 7th grade- screen for 7th grade readiness and then implement 7th grade CCSS 8th grade-screen for 8th grade readiness then implement 8th grade CCSS advanced 8th grade-TBA 9th grade o Algebra Ia-teachers are working on deleting and adding to make more CCSS like o Algebra Ib-teachers are working on deleting and adding to make more CCSS like o Algebra Ic-teachers are working on deleting and adding to make more CCSS like

Middle School teachers noted that we will need to work on a plan for technology infrastructure in order to test with Delta Math MCTM- note that Bill McCallum (author of CCSS Math) will be there Summary-At this point the secondary has a rough plan for fall. The largest questions are advanced 8th grade and how many trimesters to make Algebra I for the school year of 2013-2014. Once we get the school year rolling, the next step will be to begin working within PLCs to work through the "how" we will deliver CCSS to our students and the types of experiences we should be giving them to be prepared for the SMARTER Balanced Assessment.
