Vorwort

Foreword

Die Idee, die bereits fur Blockfloten-Gruppen er

schienene Variationsreihe tiber "Happy Birthday"
von Gerhard Wolters, .Jedem sein Geburtstags
standchen", fur Streicher-Ensembleherauszugeben,
entstand mehr aus einem privaten AnlaB, an dem der
Transkripteur selbst zur Bratsche griff. Dabei ent
deckte er, welchen Reiz diese geistreich-humorvoll
komponierten Stticke auch auf Streicher ausuben;
nicht verwunderlich, da die in den Variationen
verarbeiteten Melodien in ihrer Originalgestalt vor
wiegend von Streichinstrumenten ausgeflihrt wer
den.

The idea of arranging Gerhard Wolters' set of

variations on "Happy Birthday" came to me after
having played them on viola at a private function. In
so doing, I discovered how well this charming, witty
set of pieces for recorder ensemble would adapt to
the medium of the string quartet, perhaps not
surprisingly, since much of the melodic material on
which the pieces are based was scored originally for
string instruments.

Der musikalische Wert liegt zunachst vor allem in

der stilistischen Vielfalt, die dem Schtiler Gelegen
heit bietet, vom Horen Vertrautes musikalisch selbst
umzusetzen, Zum anderen ist beim Thema Geburts
tag ein konkreter AnlaB zum Spielen fast immer
gegeben; das befltigelt die Motivation.
Die hier vorliegenden Bearbeitungen sind nicht
zuletzt auch das schone Ergebnis einer mehrjahri
gen, gegenseitig befruchtenden Zusammenarbeit
zwischen Gerhard Wolters und dem Verfasser an
der Jugendmusikschule Mulheim/Ruhr.

The musical interest resides primarily in its stylistic

variety, affording pupils the opportunity to hear
familiar music transformed in various ways. Also,
with its "Happy Birthday" theme, you can find a
reason to perform this piece at practically any time.
of the year.
This arrangement is also for me the fine result of a
long' standing mutually beneficial collaboration
between Gerhard Wolters and myself, working
together at the music school in Miilheim/Ruhr.

Nach dem groBen Erfolg von Jedem seinen Kuckuck hat slch der Autor entschlossen, noch
einmal ein bekanntes Lied in die Farbt6pfe der Musikschichte einzutauchen, um es in ganz
unterschiedlichen Schattierungen wieder ans Tageslicht zu holen. Er hat dabei viele
bekannte Weisen berOhmter Komponisten in die Geburtstaqsstandchen einflieBen lassen
Der Musikliebhaberwird bestrebt sein, mliglichst aile zitierten Werke zu identifizieren; dem
Blockfl6tenlehrer ist wiederum die M6glichkeit gegeben, den SchOlem Epochen und deren
Kompositionen naherzubringen, die sie sonst im Blockfl6ten-Unterricht kaum kennenler
nen wOrden.

After the great success of To Each His Own Cuckoo the author resolved once again to dress
up a famous tune, as it were, in the colours of musical history, so that it would emerge as
something very different. This time he allowed a number of familiar works by big names in
Classical music to influence the result.
Music lovers shouldn't have much difficulty in identifying the quotations; the recorder
students, on the other hand, wlll benefit from the introduction to themes which otherwise
they might never get to know in their recorder classes.
