Angelina Grimk

I appeal to you, my friends, as mothers: are you willing to enslave your children? You stare back with horror and indignation at such questions. But why, if slavery is not wrong to those upon whom it is imposed?

Who is She?

Angelina Emily Grimk Weld was an American political activist, abolitionist, women's rights advocate, and supporter of the women's suffrage movement One of her greatest claims to fame was in 1836, when a letter she sent to William Lloyd Garrison was published in his antislavery newspaper, The Liberator. In 1838, Angelina became the first woman to address a legislative body when she spoke to the Massachusetts State Legislature on women's rights and abolition

Her Beliefs

In her Appeal to Women of the South Grimk writes "exceeding sinfulness of slavery... [and their] sense of duty as Christian women" to persuade the Christian women who populate the south. She believes it is not only her right but her duty to make her opinion known and try to explain and persuade people who disagree with her She believes all humans have the right to be treated equally and the responsibility to fight for that right

Overview

Grimk sees the inequality and mistreatment of her fellow man through slavery and lack of womens rights. She was an American political activist, abolitionist, women's rights advocate, and supporter of the women's suffrage movement, this caused the people around her to reflect on their own views on the equality of their fellow man and made the USA a more free and equal place. She believes the responsibility of mankind is to fight for and preserve our equality She spoke for what she believed in even when it was not a popular opinion
