3/3/2014 Social Studies Lesson Plan Title of Lesson(s): Baltic States and Border Nations Slideshow Presentation Topic

or Main Ideas: This Lesson plans main topics are, covering the three Baltic Nation and Border Nations in Eastern Europe, with extensive information and material on them as well. This covers and ranges from the effects the USSR had on these nations during its course. This also delves into Ukraines history as well, including the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster in detail. The last few topics cover Belarus and Moldova with information on their history, with a focus on their history and people in Eastern Europe. Objectives: Students will be able to describe how the location of the Baltic States has affected its history. Students will be able to understand the Ukraines role in Eastern European history. Students will comprehend the size and scale on which the Chernobyl incident was, and understand how it affected the world. Students will be able to gauge how close Belarus and Russia are, along with seeing how close Moldova and Romania are in their relations as well. Standards Used: STANDARD ONE: Demonstrates knowledge of the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) s/he teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful to students. STANDARD TWO: Demonstrates the ability to integrate the concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures among the disciplines. STANDARD FOUR: Plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, and curriculum goals. STANDARD FIVE: Understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies and appropriate technologies. STANDARD SEVEN: Demonstrates the ability to support students learning and well being by engaging students, home, school, colleagues, and community. STANDARD EIGHT: Understands and uses a variety of formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and support the development of the learner. Materials: Pencil/Pen with paper to record notes A laptop or Ipad to record notes Baerwald, Thomas J. Fraser, Celeste, World Geography, Building a Global Perspective, 2009 Pearson Education Incorporated Activity: I will be delivering the lesson through the use of PowerPoint, as it has been received very well in prior lessons I have delivered, this will encompass a variety of information slides, followed with links pertaining to the content we are covering as well. After the Baltic section is covered, I will open a discussion with the students on the current Crisis going on in the Ukraine over the past

few weeks. This will inspire additional questioning on Ukraines placement in Europe, and how outside forces can affect its sovereignty. Assessment: At the end of chapter 19, there will be a brief quiz that will encompass a variety of material covered from the chapter over the past week and a half. This quiz will also show examples of questions that might be asked on the examination in April. Homework: Before each class, students will be assigned 1-2 pages of extensive notes on the material at hand, and deliver them at the beginning of next class. This will count as a participation grade.
