Jenna Bolle Observation One Lesson Plan Course- Economics Grade-11 and 12 Length- One hour Title- Specialization

ObjectiveStudents will be able to understand how specialization is key to an economy being successful through a simulation, discussion, and lecture. StandardsCG3.4. Comparative economic advantages and disadvantages of regions, regarding cost of labor, natural resources, location, and tradition Anticipatory Set- Students will do an Eight Minute to Win It activity, where they complete two ACT prep reading sections and two questions. Activitiesa. Hand out Eight Minute to Win It worksheet, ACT practice questions. Students will complete two reading sections which includes two questions. b. Pass out materials needed for a simulation, paper, scissors, coloring utensils, and markers, and note taking sheet. c. Instruct students that they will create as many birthday cards as possible. Each student will be an independent worker, making birthday cards one at a time. d. The teacher will model how to create a birthday card. First cut a piece of paper in half, fold one-half of paper, draw a picture on the front (examples include a smiley face, balloons, a cake, or candles), then on the inside write happy birthday. e. Allow the students four minutes to complete the first part of the activity. Teacher will use an overhead timer. f. On the board write how many cards were created by the class, and construct a bar graph using the data. g. Then have the class break into groups of two, each group member will now be responsible for two of the tasks needed to make a birthday card. The group will decide what members will perform which tasks. h. Allow the students four minutes to complete the second part of the activity. The teacher will again use an overhead timer. i. On the board write how many cards were created by each group, and add another bar to the graph using the data from that round.

Instruct students that now they will break into groups of four. Each group member now responsible for one task involved in making a birthday card. The group will choose what task each person will perform. Again, allow the students four minutes to complete the second part of the activity. Teacher will use an overhead timer. On the board write how many cards were created by each group a second time and add the last bar to the graph using the data from the final round. This is a simulation of specialization. Debrief and have discussion about specialization. Transition into trade by having the student make mutual trades using the birthday cards created. Prezi presentation along with on-going discussion and note taking will occur.

Assessmenta. Discussion will display if students grasp the economic concept of specialization. b. The note taking worksheet will show if students paid attention to the lecture. It will assess participation. ClosureWhat is one aspect about specialization that you learned today? Higher Level ThinkingWhy does specialization only work in certain countries? When would a country not want to use specialization? RelevanceMany of the students have part time jobs. Specialization directly relates to the jobs each one currently has as employment (one example is a student stocks milk at the supermarket). It displays for the students why specialization in a certain career is important. Homework- No homework is assigned for the lesson
