American Sign Language 101 Unit 1 Lesson Plan: Colors, Numbers and Animals

70 minutes

Lesson Objectives: To learn the signs for colors, numbers and animals and apply them through activity. To build receptive skills through student interaction To be able to ask for a sign, animal or items within the classroom. The students will learn how to sign colors, numbers and animals with power points, environmental resources and feedback. There are 12 signs for colors and the instruction of numbers will be through the number of animals (from 1 to 15) and review of numbers through dominos. The students will learn the signs for animals through numbers. The purpose of the animal signs is to introduce the animal game which students will sign animals, encouraging receptive and pragmatic skills. Lesson Materials: Power Points o Colors o Numbers with animals Environmental Resources o Students o Clothing o Books, pencils and school bags (not limited to those items) Teaching Methods applied Direct Method and Krashens N+1. Direct Method will use pictures and demonstration of environmental resources, aligning with N+1, building on receptive comprehension and expressive skills. Curriculum/Textbook sources: Signing Naturally, 2012 edition and Deaf Communitys Animal Game Lesson Outcomes: The students will demonstrate use of signs with environmental resources and/or independently The students will be able to identify features through colors and items The students will be able to build on receptive skills through manual feature changes, environmental resources and feedback. Assessment: Check for comprehension through questions, turn taking and observations. Lesson Quiz: Students will take a receptive comprehension quiz on Blackboard with videos of the teacher providing information and a multiple-choice format to identify students understanding of lesson provided. The materials covered are: o Colors o Clothing & Hair o Numbers o Additional resources learned in class such as school items.

Activities: Colors: students clothing, items and environment resources* Numbers: counting number of students by gender, type of shoes, glasses, hats or other items that show differentiation in numbers. * Animals:* play the animal game (split class in half and into circle); students choose one animal to sign. Once all students choose an animal (sometimes will add a new animal sign not taught) and all practice each others animals, a student leader will be chosen and this student will sign his/her animal and add another students animal, i.e. student leader signs his animal DOG and adds another students sign CAT. The CAT student will sign her sign CAT and add another students sign, maybe BIRD. This activity is not in order of students in circle, can be across the circle or repeated turn taking action. This game does not out anyone, just to build visual skills. *Additional signs will be provided through the activities, which are not in the book or unit. _____________________________ Plan: Colors Power Point 5 to 7 minutes o Environment Resources; practice colors 10 minutes Go through with the students, the colors on the PP. Use students clothing, materials and school bags for color reference. Questions? Numbers and Animals Power Point 10 to 15 minutes o The numbers also have animals, i.e. 5 PIGS, 2 HORSES, etc. Go through the PP with students. The first part is with animals, the last few slides are die and dominos as a review o Practice numbers by asking questions 15 minutes Gender Type of shoes Glasses Hats Other Animal Activity rest of class time; can move some students from each group to mix receptive skills practice (not all hands look the same) o The class will divide into half and form their own circle. Each student will decide on one animal, a student can ask for sign when one is not available from the PP. o When the students have decided upon their animal, the students will practice the animal signs. After a few seconds, a student is chosen leader and explained (with all students watching) how the game works. The students animal is BAT. The student will sign BAT then add DOG. This passes over to

Notes:

the students whose sign is DOG. This student will then sign DOG CAT, passing over to the student whose sign is CAT. The student will proceed to add a second animal sign to his/her CAT and the process goes on. o Somewhere throughout half of the games process, the teacher will split each group into half and switch the students to encourage receptive skills comprehension and possible introduction of new animal signs. Before end of class questions.

The three slides after Numbers has motion paths and growth for individual instructions. Each slide will be approximately 45 seconds to 75 seconds.

Color Power Point:

The slides have motion paths and growth for visual comprehension. The last slide will remove the colors that do not go into a rainbow and the rest merge into a rainbow.
