Part I

Part II

Part III (conclusion)

Structure: The speech can be de$ided in two parts which are followed by the final conclusion' !n part one the speaker names abstract reasons which he does not want his soldiers to fight for' The king, his kingdom, honor, glory, riches (l. " ) 5* !n part two, the speaker enumerates concrete, personal and important things he does want his soldiers to fight for' their city, their possessions (houses and gold* their women (l. + , "#*. The third concluding part consists of the imperati$e to fight the attackers. Stylistic analysis: The first part ist dominated by anaphoras (Don't fight for...* in all fi$e lines which strengthen the meaning. The second part is also dominated by repetition. et here it is -ust one word, the personal pronoun .your.. This supports the closeness and indi$idual $alue of the things the soldiers stand to lose if they refuse to fight the attackers. Thus the power of the speech is fired by the contrast between part one and part two' Don't fight for abstract things you are not going to obtain, but fight to protect the people and things close to you& The concluding third part shows this contrast in one single line' The attackers are honorable fighters, yet they need to be killed& The contrast between .bra$e men. (l. ""* and the imperati$e to kill these bra$e men in the same sentence can also be seen as a bathos/ (heroic $ocabulary $s. common speech* foreshadowingthe coming slaughter of the battle. / bathos 0 Stilbruch.
