PBO: 1. Upon completing the lesson, English Language Learners (ELL) will be able to apply action verbs in sentences using correct conjugations with at least 80% accuracy. PBO: 2. Upon completing the lesson, English Language Learners will be able to apply linking verbs in sentences using correct conjugations with at least 80% accuracy. 1. First, lesson will be instructorled (Direct -instruction) to introduce topic. I will do a lecture on action and linking verbs. Rationale-Since students are ELLs, the topic will need to be explained in a very detailed manner with many examples and visuals. Students will be note taking during lecture, and examples will be written on whiteboard. 2. Students will then watch a 10 minute video clip of people conversing to reinforce action and linking verbs. While students are watching the clip, they will be writing the action and linking verbs on cornell notes. Rationale-Comprehension 3. Then we will discuss the cornell notes to verify all action and linking verbs notated. Students will also have opportunity to ask questions during this time to verify they understand concept. Rationale-Comprehension 4. Afterwards, students will be assigned to complete some worksheet and textbook assignments to practice action and linking verbs independently. Rationale-Application 5. Then students will be asked to share their responses with the class for the worksheet and textbook assignment. Students

will have another opportunity to ask questions. Rationale-Comprehension 6. Students will then be assigned to write an individual journal assignment. In this assignment, students will write about a family vacation. Then students will underline all action and linking verbs. Rationale-Application 7. Students will then get into pairs and share their family vacation. They will also explain when action and linking verbs were used. I will circulate about the room to facilitate and monitor students progress. Rationale-Analyze 8. The same pairs will do a role play of their family vacation. Then pairs will act out the role play in front of the class. (Done also to build interest) Rationale-Creation 9. At the end of the class, students will be assigned homework to practice action and linking verbs. Rationale-Comprehension and Application

Formative Assessment

I will ask the pairs questions about the role play. The class will then ask questions about the role play. This will be done for every pair in the class (Questioning) Students will be evaluating peers by using a rubric, and I will also be using my own learning-objective rubric to evaluate the role play. ( Peer and Teacher evaluations) A short quiz will then be given on action and linking verbs. (Quiz) Then an academic game will be played at the end to reinforce lesson and to build interest. (Academic game)

Materials and Resources

list any materials and resources needed for this lesson

Other types of formative assessments that were used in lesson: 1. Graphic organizers 2. Discussions 3. Observations 4. Collaborative learning 5. Journal writing 6. Quizzes As a closure activity, I will have students write a brief summary or learning log of what they have learned in the class session. I think its a great way to close the session because its student centered, and I can truly assess if they have learned and understood the concepts. Then I will have a few students volunteer to share their summary with the class. Then I will collect all summaries at the end. Finally, I will share with students what we will learn in next session. My rationale for closing this way is for the simple reason that the students are ELLs, and it provides opportunity for conversational practice. Materials 1. Whiteboard 2. Video 3. Textbook 4. Worksheets 5. Graphic organizer 6. Rubrics
