Grade 4/5 Lesson Plan: Social Studies (Day 1) Topic: Early Societies: Ancient Egypt Strand: Heritage &

Citizenship Duration: Period 2 50 minutes Overall Expectations: A3: Demonstrate an understanding of key aspects of a few early societies (3000 BCE1500 CE), each from a different region and era and representing a different culture, with reference to their political and social organization, daily life, and relationships with the environment and with each other

Specific Expectations: A3.3: describe significant aspects of daily life in two or more early societies A3.5: describe the importance of the environment for two or more early societies, including how the local environment affected the ways in which people met their physical needs A3.6: identify and describe some of the major scientific and technological developments in the ancient and medieval world A3.7: describe how two or more early societies were governed A3.8: describe the social organization of some different early societies

Learning Goal To learn about and understand Ancient Egypt, in terms of its culture, location and environment, government, beliefs, and inventions.

Success Criteria I can identify where in the world Ancient Egypt was, and create a map of important geographic features I can describe the social structures of Ancient Egypt I can use hieroglyphics to spell English words

Resources: 1. Chart paper 2. Slideshow Ancient Egypt: What do we know?! Introductory Activity: (10-15 min) Introduce the upcoming unit on Ancient Egypt Why is it important to study ancient cultures? Ask students if they have heard of Egypt o Ask them what they know about it? o Where have they heard about it before? Movies?

Grade 4/5 Books? Teachers?

Development Strategies: (25-30 minutes) Draw names and make groups of 3 Introduce the idea of predicting what they will learn Progress through the slideshow, asking each group to discuss amongst themselves what they believe is the correct answer o Have them share their ideas with the class Have the students record their ideas on a sheet of paper titled Predicting the Past

Concluding Activity: (5-10 minutes) Have a few volunteers share their ideas of what they expect to learn over the course of the coming lessons

Method of Evaluation: Anecdotal notes of student participation in class discussions & group work Completion of the Predicting the Past sheet with thoughtful and clear ideas
