Using Google Docs (spread sheets) in PDHPE

Outcome 4.9 describes the benefits of a balanced lifestyle and participation in physical activity. What do we want students to know, understand and be able to do? Compare personal levels of physical activity to Australia's Physical Activity recommendations for children and young people. Identify opportunities and strategies for increased levels of physical activity. Enter performance data into a prepared spreadsheet template and formulate and analyse results

Cross-curriculum content: Enter data into a prepared template format and analyse it.

In this activity, students will enter data into a prepared template, format and analyse the data, generate specific reports with regards to ethical issues, and demonstrate an understanding of ethical issues related to the use of ICT. Task: Students record and analyse their levels of physical activity and compare to Australia's Physical Activity recommendations for children and young people. Students make suggestions about how they could increase their levels of physical activity. Steps: Students undertake the following steps to complete the task. 1. Record in a journal or logbook all structured and incidental physical activity participated in over the period of one week. A suggested Physical Activity Log template is provided. Teachers determine whether students will insert the formula into the spread sheet or whether the formula will be included as part of the spread sheet template based on time available and student skill level (both options are available). The spread sheet could be provided to students in hard copy to prepare data before entering it into an electronic copy. This will be particularly useful if access to computers is limited.

2. Students review Australia's Physical Activity recommendations for children and young people. 3. Students identify information and data required to allow for comparison of their levels of physical activity to the recommendations. For example, amount of moderate activity per day, amount of vigorous activity each week, number of inactive days each week, etc. 4. Compare the data gathered on personal physical activity levels to Australia's Physical Activity recommendations for children and young people. This could be illustrated through the use of graphs generated from the completed spread sheet. 5. Analyse student findings and formulate suggestions of how physical activity could be included more in daily life. 6. Combine the data from all students into a single spread sheet and create a report that demonstrates an understanding of the ethical issues involved in publishing data collated using ICT, for example, the names of students are removed to ensure that the physical activity data is anonymous. 7. Students identify why confidentiality is important in data collection and reporting. 8. As a class, discuss other ethical issues that may arise from collecting and reporting on personal data.
