Animal Symmetry

Seton Hill Lesson Plan Lauren Mariano

Behavioral Objective(s): Students will be able to identify the line of symmetry on their animal mask. Pennsylvania State Academic Standard(s): 2.9.2.B: Identify and draw lines of symmetry. NCTM Standard(s): Apply transformations and use symmetry to analyze mathematical situations Pre-K2 Expectations: In pre-K through grade 2 all students should recognize and apply slides, flips, and turns; recognize and create shapes that have symmetry. Materials and/or Equipment: Animal Masks Example Pictures of symmetry (buildings, animals, plants) Colored Pencils/Crayons/Markers Activities and Procedures: Anticipatory Set: Introduce symmetry and explain what it is. Also explain what a line of symmetry is and show class using shapes. Then show pictures of symmetry in everyday life (plants, animals, buildings). Lesson Sequence: 1. Students will each get an animal mask 2. Student will first draw the line of symmetry down the mask 3. Students will color their mask while keeping both sides symmetrical Closure: After students have completed their masks, they will gently fold their mask along the line of symmetry they made and check if their mask turned out completely symmetrical. Tie to Environment: Animals faces, buildings, and plants are all very symmetrical and lines of symmetry are very apparent in their images.
