Teacher Notebook #2 Child A: List the three assessments you administered to this child: (5 pts) Event Recording, Anecdotal

Records, Time Sampling Describe specific information you learned about this child through the three assessments identified above. (This might include areas of interest, learning styles, learning disabilities, distractions, physical disabilities, social skills, etc.)(15 pts) I administered these three assessments to learn more about Child A and his normal occurrences on a typical school day. The first assessment I performed was the Event Recording where I took a frequency sampling of how many times the student got out of his seat. In the forty five minutes that I observed for this action, Child A got out of his seat ten times. The amount of time lapsed between occurrences that the student got out of his seat ranged between two minutes to six minutes, with the average being not quite three minutes between each time the student got out of his chair. However, there was one account where the student stayed seated for twelve minutes (this was not figured in the average). All forty-five minutes of the observed time was during teacher instruction. During the twelve minutes that the student remained seated, the teacher was performing a very interesting science experiment, and the student sat and watched in amazement, almost not moving at all. I found that it is very hard for Child A to stay seated without movement for extended periods of time, unless he is completely engaged in the teaching that is going on. The second assessment that I used was anecdotal records. I have paid careful attention to child As interaction with other students. This student is quite concerned about how others view him and becomes upset when others dont agree with him or when they speak unkind words to him. When this occurs, he makes it a point to tell the teacher in hope that the teacher will resolve it for him. During one particular incident when another student told Child A that he didnt like him, he became quite upset and came back in from lunch recess to tell Ms. Jones about the incident. He wanted the other student to receive a consequence for his unkind actions. The third assessment I administered was Time Sampling where I observed the student for thirty five minutes and noted everything he did in the time allotted. During this observation the student most often was off task, not doing what was expected of him. He wasnt totally disruptive to the whole class with his actions, but rather, he simply found ways to not do what he should be doing. For example, during silent reading Child A decided his book needed to be taped so he spent much of the time taping his book or talking to other students. I also found that the student will often shout out answers and has a very hard time sitting still. He often changes positions in his chair and sits with his feet and legs where they shouldnt be, either draped over the back of his chair, or on his chair seat. When reading he seemed more interested in the pictures than the text, but when he did read, he likes to share what he read with the students around him. If there was any opportunity for Child A to talk, he did. He likes to be social and interact with those around him, but he likes their actions to be compliant with what he wants them to do.

Identify a behavior or an academic skill that you would focus on to help this child be more successful at school. (Some suggestions are: staying in seat, developing social skills, completing assignments, anger issues, more challenging assignments and/or instruction, etc.) (10 pts) My focus for Child A is to help him realize that classmates arent always going to act the way he think s they should or how he wants them to act. I would also like him to realize that when other students arent complying with his idea of correct, then he doesnt always need to turn to the teacher and seek a consequence for the other student. It would be ideal if I could motivate Child A to stay in his seat more and not move around so much in order to help keep his focus and attention on his school work. However, I know that with many ADHD children, movement can be a coping method and something that they need.

Describe how you will use specific information collected from the three assessments listed above in a plan to help this student improve his/her behavior, make school more meaningful and successful and/or help this child to develop socially, intellectually, and/or emotionally. (The information collected might include: favorite foods, favorite school content areas, social skills or social settings, personal areas of interest such as animals, electronics, sports, countries other cultures, learning styles, etc.) (15 pts) I order to start a plan of action with Child A, I would first read him the book Tattle Tongue. I could then talk about this with him and go over the rules of when it is okay to come to the teacher to seek help in solving disagreements with other students. I would help him to realize that many times it is best to work out problems with other classmates by simply talking it through with them and betting them know how their actions make you feel. I could also attempt to help the student sit still in his seat more and remain seated by implementing a rewards system for him at the end of each day if he didnt exceed the number of times you would like him to get out of his seat. In the beginning the monitoring may have to be done on an hourly basis, and then perhaps could be moved to before lunch and after lunch. My hope would be that after some time of thinking about not getting out of his seat, Child A would eventually be better at it automatically, without giving it much thought. Together we would choose what the rewards would be for desired behavior so they would be sure to be motivating for him. As a teacher I would need to continuously monitor Child A in his associations with classmates and be sure and provide him the opportunity to solve his disagreements with other students and not always being the one to solve them for him. It would also be necessary for me to be consistent with my rewards to Child A when working to motivate him to stay in his seat with less movement and have continual focus.
