Student will display the extent of their vocabulary as well as their knowledge of text. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of monitoring for meaning while reading. Students will show their ability to think critically and analytically about text and content.

Individual Expectations: Students will improve personal understanding of text, meaning, and literacy cues.

Definitions of Cloze Reading: 'Cloze' texts are reading passages which have certain words taken out and replaced by an underlined blank space. Each space indicates where the reader should put the missing word. The reader has to use the context of the passage to supply the appropriate word. The cloze procedure was originally used as a way of assessing reading comprehension. It is a great way of assessing if the reader can understand what they are reading. It also engages the reader in active reading because they have to process the meaning of the words as they read. More recently it is used to help in the teaching of reading. Activities using cloze procedure can help learners develop reading and writing skills such as comprehension, fluency, sequencing and spelling.

Learning Activities: Class Starter: I generally begin this class with a fun and unique for of Mrs. Richardsons Mad Libs. I do this exercise early in the year. This is an ice breaker where students are allowed to have some fun, but need to follow directions to fill out their Mad Lib. This allows me to asses a students knowledge of basic grammar, as well as giving them a glimpse into the upcoming assignment.

Review of Previously Learned Material/Lesson Connections: Review basic English Language Arts, and grammar,

Statement of Objectives: SWBAT identify literacy cues, and respond with appropriately. SWBAT use their knowledge to complete worksheets with increasing skill.

New Material: New materials will include texts across multiple genres. This will ensure students are actively monitoring their reading experiences across the curriculum.

Guided Practice: The Mad Libs will be used as an ice breaker as well as guided practice. Independent Practice: Students will be given worksheets for independent practice.

Homework: Homework is not typical with this lesson, as this is generally a very short lesson. This is a discovery lesson for me to be able to identify where my students are at the beginning of the year. It is usually repeated at the end of the year as a means of assessing how much my students have grown in comprehension and ability.
