Grade 4/5 Lesson Plan: Social Studies (Day 1) Topic: Early Societies: Ancient Egypt Strand: Heritage &

Citizenship Duration: Period 5 & 6 100 minutes Overall Expectations: A3: Demonstrate an understanding of key aspects of a few early societies (3000 BCE1500 CE), each from a different region and era and representing a different culture, with reference to their political and social organization, daily life, and relationships with the environment and with each other

Specific Expectations: A3.3: describe significant aspects of daily life in two or more early societies A3.5: describe the importance of the environment for two or more early societies, including how the local environment affected the ways in which people met their physical needs A3.6: identify and describe some of the major scientific and technological developments in the ancient and medieval world A3.7: describe how two or more early societies were governed A3.8: describe the social organization of some different early societies

Learning Goal To learn the geography of Egypt and illustrate it with a map.

Success Criteria I can identify where in the world Ancient Egypt was, and create a map of important geographic features I include relevant map features, such as a compass, legend, and scale line

Resources: 1. Blank maps of Egypt 2. Various maps of Egypt 3. A list of cities, bodies of water, key points of interest for students to plot Introductory Activity: (15-20 min) Have one or two students present their research to the class o Choose students who answered the question about Egypts location Introduce maps o Why are they important? o What do they show us? o How do they help us? o What can we learn from them?

Grade 4/5 Ask students for a list of key features on a map

Development Strategies: (20 minutes) On an overhead projector, create a map of Egypt with the students Demonstrate appropriate placement of compass, title, legend Discuss use of colours o Why are colours important?

Concluding Activity: (55-60 minutes) Have the students create their own maps of Egypt, using the blank template o Ask them to find the items listed o Include key map components as previously discussed o Make it colourful They must use a variety of maps, as not all maps will have each item listed

Method of Evaluation: Anecdotal notes of student participation in class discussions & group work Completion of the map, including all locations and proper map components
