The Learner Profile

This document provides a comparison between what IB uses for a definition, and what the Kalkaska district has adopted as an acceptable definition for the elementary students.

Inquirer
IB says learners: We say:

Knowledgeable
IB says learners: We say:

Thinkers
IB says learners: Exercise initiative in applying thinking skills critically and creatively to recognize and approach complex problems. They make reasoned and ethical decisions. We say: We use our heads.

Communicators
IB says learners: Understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language. They use a variety of modes of communication. They work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others We say: We share ideas.

Principled
IB says learners: Act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, justice and respect for the dignity of others. They take responsibility for their own actions and consequences that accompany them. We say: We do the right thing.

Open-Minded
IB says learners: We say:

Understand and appreciate their own cultures We respect others. and personal histories. They are open to the perspectives, values, and traditions of others. they seek and evaluate a wide range of points of view, and are willing to grow from the experience.

Caring
IB says learners: Show empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and fellings of others. They have a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and the environmen. We say: We are kind.

Courageous
IB says learners: We say:

Approach unfamiliar situations and We try new things. uncertainty with courage and forethought, and have the independence of spirit to explore new roles, ideas and strategies. They are brave and articulate in defending their beliefs.

Balanced

IB says learners: Understand the importance of intellectual physical, and emotional balance to achieve personal well-being for themselves and others.

Reflective
IB says learners: Give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and experience. They are able to assess and understand their strengths and limitations in order to support their learning and personal development. We say: We find ways to be better.
