ROOFS, LOFTS AND ATTICS

KEY AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES FROM THIS TOPIC

To introduce the class to the skills and knowledge involved in constructing Roofs, Lofts And Attics. Introduce the students to the construction materials and correct practice in selecting and constructing Roofs, Lofts And Attics when building. To develop the students ability to successfully recognise and label parts of Roofs, Lofts And Attics. To motivate and to engage the students in the new topic, At the end of the lesson the students should be engaged and inquisitive about the next lesson.

ROOF FUCTIONS:

CONSTRUCTION OF ROOFS

2 WAYS
Cut Roof Made and erected on site by carpenters with the use of power tool

Trussed Roofs Made in a factory and delivered to site by lorry and lifted in to position by the use of a crane. Cut Roof Trussed Roofs

DIFFERENCES

Usually it is uneconomical to get a trussed roof made for a one off single dwelling. a housing estate with many houses of the same design would make most use of mass production trusses.

Click !!! Cut roofs are slower to make but no lifting crane is necessary and cut roofs generally have more attic space which can be converted at a later stage

CUT-ROOF
Advantages:
More Attic Space For Conversions No Lifting Equipment Needed

TRUSS ROOF
Advantages:
Quicker Useful Where Large Quantities Are Required

Disadvantages:
Slower Construction More Labour Involved

Disadvantages:
Crane Needed For Lifting Into Place Less Room For Conversion Carbon Footprint May Be Higher

TRUSS TYPES

W or Fink truss (up to 8 m span). This is the most common type of truss.

The fan truss is designed for spans from 8-11 m.

King post truss. A traditional timber roof truss with a vertical post from the apex to the centre of the bottom tie beam. Spans up to 11m.

TRUSS TYPES
Queen post truss. This truss has no central post.

Mansard truss. This is used for a pitched roof with a shallow top part and steeper lower part. Generally used with dormers in the attic space.

LOFTS
A loft can be an upper storey or attic in a building, directly under the roof. Alternatively, a loft apartment refers to large adaptable open space, often converted for residential use (a converted loft) from some other use, often light industrial. Adding to the confusion, some converted lofts include upper open loft areas.

LIVING SPACES IN THE ROOF: There is a long tradition in Ireland of using the roof (attic) spaces to increase the amount of living space in house. The arrangement of the structure members in traditional cut roofs lends these roofs to conversion for use as living space.

ATTICS FUNCTIONS
Storage .......... (not just for Christmas Decorations). Store over flow tank and water tank.

Can be converted in to habitable living space.

Ventilation. Access for services such as Wiring & Plumbing
