effect gravity? _____________________________________________________________________________ Central Focus/Big Idea: The effect of friction on gravity. Subject of this lesson: The force of friction, including air resistance, effects gravity. Grade Level: 5th NC Essential Standard(s): 5.P.1.1 Explain how factors such as gravity, friction, and change in
mass affect the motion of objects.

Next Generation Science Standard(s):

K-PS2-2. Analyze data to determine if a design solution works as intended to change the speed or direction of an object with a push or a pull.*

21st Century Skills: Creativity and Innovation-Outcome for 4th grade states students should provide concrete examples of science as a way of thinking that involves both systematic and creative processes that anyone can apply as they ask questions, solve problems, invent things, and develop ideas about the world around them. Critical Thinking and Problem SolvingOutcome for 4th grade addresses importance of asking scientific questions, designing and conducting investigations, constructing explanations from their observations, and discussing their explanations with others. Collaboration-Outcome for 4th grade states students should work collaboratively with others, both in small and large groups, in their science classroom. Academic Language Demand Language Function: In the table below highlight the three most important language functions for your lesson. Explain why you chose these. Analyze-Students will have to analyze why certain objects land quicker than others when dropped. Predict-Students will have to predict which objects will land faster when dropped. Compare/contrast-Students will have to compare objects against each other to see which will land first when dropped. Analyze Argue Categorize Compare/contrast Describe Explain Interpret Predict Question Retell Summarize

Scientific Vocabulary: What are the key scientific terms that your students will learn through this lesson? Gravity, mass, friction, air resistance

Instructional Objective: Students will be able to draw a picture of 3 sets of items being dropped from a building and write a sentence underneath each set stating which will land first and why. Prior Knowledge (student): Students should have a basic understanding of what gravity is. Content Knowledge (teacher): Gravity is the attraction between 2 objects that have mass. Air resistance is a type of friction the atmosphere, or air, places on an object while it is travelling through the air. Accommodations for special needs (individual and/or small group): ELL-I will place them with students who have a good grasp of English. Students with disabilities-I will place them with students who will be able to grasp the class content to work with these students. Materials and Technology requirements: Enough paper for each student to have 3 pieces of paper A book for each student (preferably hard-backed) A pencil for each student SMART board Total Estimated Time: 1 hour Source of lesson: I developed it after reading about the experiment in the book Invitations to Science Inquiry that will be done in class. Safety considerations: I will reiterate to students they should not drop the books on their feet or a classmates foot.

Content and Strategies (Procedure) In your procedure, be sure to include all of the following 5 Es. Your procedure should be detailed enough for a colleague to follow. If you will be relying on technology (e.g., a YouTube video), describe your back up plan thoroughly. Imagine your most novice colleague needing to teach from your plan. Dont just answer the questions. Additionally, I expect you to include possible questions you could ask for each section. This needs to include higher-order questions. Engage: Teacher will ask class the following questions: What is gravity? What is affected by gravity? What things or forces act on gravity? Does gravity change? What would happen if we did not have gravity? Teacher will then play the following video on the SMART board: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lY3XV_GGV0M If video does not work, students will discuss in pairs their thoughts on the above questions. Explore: Teacher will place students into groups of 4. Each group will take out a book, a pencil, and will be provided with 1 piece of paper the size of the book. Teacher will instruct students to drop the piece of paper and the book at the same time. . Teacher will then ask the entire class the following questions: When you dropped the piece of paper and the book side by side, what happened? Why do you think this occurred? Do you think there is a way to make the paper and the book to reach the ground at the same time? Teacher will then tell students to place the piece of paper on top of the book and to drop the two in this manner. Teacher will then ask the entire class the following questions: What happened this time when you dropped the paper and the book? Why do you think the paper landed on the ground at the same time as the book with this experiment? Do you think there is another way to make the book and paper land at the same time? How? Teacher will tell students to crumple the piece of paper and to drop this and the book at the same time, side by side. Teacher will ask the entire class the following questions: What happened this time when you crumpled the paper and dropped it and the book at the same time? Why do you think this occurred? Is gravity stronger on the paper when it is crumpled versus when it is smooth? What force is acting on the paper to slow it down when it is smooth? Explanation: Teacher will explain to class that gravity is the attraction between two objects that have mass. Teacher will ask class to give some examples of things that have mass. Teacher will also explain to students that air resistance is the type of friction that the atmosphere, or air, places

on objects. It is why the smooth piece of paper landed later than the book when they were dropped. Have student volunteers take turns reading the information on the website: http://www.physics4kids.com/files/motion_gravity.html. This will be projected on the SMART board. If website is unavailable, teacher will have groups of 4 discuss the impact of air friction on the following items if they were dropped from the top of a building: a feather, a hammer, a beach ball, and a bowling ball.

Elaborate: Students will work in pairs and write 3 paragraphs describing what would happen if Earth suddenly lost all gravitational pull. Teacher will then ask student volunteers to share their writings with the class. Teacher will ask the following questions: Why do you think these things would happen if Earth lost its gravitational pull? How do you think we could overcome these situations if Earth lost its gravitational pull? Evaluate: There will be a summative assessment given that will not be graded. Students will work individually and draw a picture of 3 sets of items being dropped from a building. They may choose the items that they draw. Underneath each picture, students will write a sentence telling which item will hit the ground first and why. To be complete after the lesson is taught as appropriate Assessment Results of all objectives/skills: Reflection on lesson: CT signature/confirmation: _________________________________ Date: ________________
