DR. Anne.

DR. Anne Withers Karen L: Hello, how are you? DR. Anne Withers:
Im fine, how have you been lately?

Karen L: Well, I have been really tired lately and Im not sure why! DR. Anne Withers:
Since I am a doctor maybe I can help! How are your sleeping habits?

Karen L: I think my sleeping habits are fine but, I have never really paid close attention to them. DR. Anne Withers:
Okay, how about you pay really close attention to your daily routine and sleeping habits for the whole week. Make sure you keep a log or journal that says when you go to sleep, wake up, and anything else that happens at night, like walking up in the middle of sleeping etc.

Karen L: Alright, Ill start that tonight but, what happens after I finish my log for this week? DR. Anne Withers:
After youre finished this week I will set up an appointment for you in my office. If your log shows any signs of symptoms or problems, you might have a sleeping disorder. But, you might also just have bad sleep habits.

Karen L: A sleeping disorder? What if I only have bad sleep habits? Will I just have to deal with it for
my whole life?

DR. Anne Withers:

Yes, there are many different sleep disorders you can possibly have. If you only

have bad sleep habits, you just need to change your lifestyle.

Karen L: Many of my other friends have sleep problems too. Does that mean that they might have a
sleeping disorder?

DR. Anne Withers:

They might have one. Many people do. In fact about 40 million people in the

US have sleeping disorders of some kind!

Karen L: Should I tell them to visit a doctor too? DR. Anne Withers:
Well, no. Before going to the doctors to see if they have a sleeping disorder you should make sure to check your symptoms. Just like you are going to with your journal!

Karen L: Oh, I understand now. Are sleeping disorders dangerous? DR. Anne Withers:
It depends on what sleeping disorder you have If you want to know if its dangerous or not. Most can be handled once a doctor properly diagnoses you. Like I will help you if you have a sleeping disorder!

Karen L: If I do end up having a sleeping disorder, will I have to get any types of surgery? DR. Anne Withers:
Most of the types of sleeping disorders do not require surgery but, I might suggest that you go to a sleep center if your log shows problems in sleep. At a sleep center, you will be monitored while you are sleeping to detect any movements and other problems.

Karen L: Thats good. I dont like surgeries! DR. Anne Withers:

What other things get rid of sleeping disorders?

Some medicines take care of them but, some go away on their own without

treatment. Since sleeping disorders can be caused by stress in your daily routine, if your stress level decreases, then your sleep disorder might go away too.

Karen L: Okay. I glad that if I do have a sleeping disorder I have a good doctor that will treat it so it will
go away! Thanks for your help!

DR. Anne Withers:

Im glad to help! It was nice talking with you! Oh, and another tip. Keep your

room quiet, dark, cold, and use a sleep mask to help you sleep! Sleep disorders cause excessive daytime sleepiness and thats not what you want while you are at work!

Karen L: Thanks so much for your help again, I really appreciate it! Have a nice day! DR. Anne Withers:
You too! Goodbye.

Sleepy Time News of California This weeks Movie reviews Parasomnia

This weekend I went to see the movie Parasomnia. It was about a teenager who was affected by two types of Parasomnias. Parasomnias are the category for types of sleeping disorders were you would have abnormal behavior while sleeping. The teen was sleepwalking and having night terrors. She was shown screaming and flailing her arms and legs while sleeping which is what happens during a night terror. Near the end of the movie, after she does many more difficult activities while asleep, she gets into her car and drives! I thought it was a great movie but it was also scary because I never knew that people who sleepwalk could do things like driving, moving furniture, or eating while asleep! So if you want to know what happens after she drives off youll have to watch the movie yourself -Maria R. Note from the editor: Both of

Hypersomnia
Yesterday I went and saw the movie The Truth about Sleeping Disorders: Hypersomnia. It was a true story that was based on three people that each had a different form of Hypersomnias. Hypersomnias is the category for all the sleeping disorders that give you excessive sleepiness. The first person that was showed in the movie had Restless leg syndrome which is where they had an urge to move every time they were sleeping or resting which causes them to wake up. This guy had no clue how he started to have Restless Leg Syndrome because it is usually is related to alcoholism, diseases, or it runs in the family but none of those are what he had! The second person was a woman who had sleep Apnea which literally means sleeping without breathing! Youll have to watch and see what will come next for her because Apnea is a potentially life threatening disease! The last person shown was a very successful business man who had Narcolepsy. Narcolepsy causes you to have sudden sleep attacks without you knowing and they can happen anytime and can make it difficult to live a normal life. He business mans job is on the line because he keeps falling asleep at work! Overall, it was a fantastic movie that I thought was very interesting! -Larry L.

these movies are based on two categories of sleep disorders. there are many different types of sleeping disorders so if you think you have one, you need to check with your doctor. The feeling of lack of sleep that comes from sleeping disorders can make you feel disconnected from your world and thats not what you want!
