The Pre and Post Assessment data was used at the beginning and end of a Language Arts Unit.

The unit was from the Reading Streets Series and was centered on a mythological story called, How Night Came from the Sea. The students learned about the story and also important language arts skills such as: generalizing, visualizing, and locating context clues. I created my own five question multiple-choice quiz based on the skills they needed to learn in the Language Arts Unit. The questions on the quiz were: What does Generalization mean? What does the word chorus mean? What genre, or type of story, is How Night Came from the Sea? What helps you when you come across an Unfamiliar Word when reading? And what do you do when you visualize during reading? The Pre-test was given to the students before I taught the Unit and seven out of the twenty-one students received 100%. These scores were earned without being introduced to the Unit at all before-hand. I believe this shows that those students used their background knowledge and tried their best, even though they were not completely familiar with the Unit information. During the Unit, I could see that the students recognized the questions from the quiz during my teaching. I even heard some of the students gasp and say that they remembered the questions from my quiz during my instruction. I thought that was so great to hear and that they were using their new knowledge and connecting it to my quiz. Every student, all 21 of them, improved their post test scores and not one students score went below their original post test score. That is wonderful data and shows a great impact on student learning from my instruction on the Language Arts Unit. Each student received an 80% or better on the post test, which is a great improvement from the pre-test. As far as any improvements for this unit goes, the best one I can think of is creating some more projects for the students to do that correlate with the information they learned from the Unit. I am a big believer

in reinforcing the information I teach students with an educational project, this is one of the best ways for their information retention. I think if I would have been able to have the time to add a poster board or media project, all of the students would have received a 100 percent on their post tests. For this curricula area, I broke out the data for two students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs). As you can see from the bar graph, both of the students improved greatly on their post test after my instruction on the Language Arts Unit. I am so thrilled to see that these two students scores improved because I know they work hard and sometimes grades do not show their potential. They were both so proud to show me their improved post test scores; it reminded me of why I want to be a teacher.
