Abstract

In radio or wireless communications as it is more commonly known, communication performance can suffer from increased bit error rates(BER)and as such the quality[1] of service (QoS) cannot be guaranteed, channel impairments and interferences can render the received radio signal to weak or corrupted for successful reception. In built up areas and cities where there are many buildings a channel impairment known as Multipath Fading can prevent successful communications. Multipath fading can be described as when a direct signal combines with a reected signal destructively, in order to help combat this problem It is proposed to design and implement a Microstrip Phased Array Antenna. Using Microstrip technology will allow due to its very small prole to used in many types of receivers example air-craft. The Phased Array Antenna beam pattern can be controlled to mitigate the effects of this Multi-Path fading.

Introduction

An Antenna is normally a metallic structure that converts an electrical signal to an electromagnetic wave(EMW)when in transmit mode or converts the received electromagnetic wave into an electrical signal when in receiver mode. The use of Microstrip technology which can be described as a transmission line for microwave energy was developed in 1952 by ITT Laboratories[1], its ease of cheap manufacture and its low prole make it an excellent choice for producing Antenna systems where light weight and low proles are important, for example air-craft, missile systems, cars. This report will design an antenna that will operate in the 2.45Ghz region this is known as the ISM frequency band, at this frequency the antenna dimensions will be quite small and compact. In order to mitigate multi-path fading An antenna array will be designed.

Conclusion

The antenna system is a critical part of a wireless communications system its function
