Relative Clause
What is a Relative Clause?
A "Relative Clause" is a part of the sentence that can be either Essential or Unessential to its meaning.

How to form a relative clause?


Imagine a girl is talking to Tom. You want to know who she is. So, you ask your friend: Do you know the girl? As your friend doesn't know which girl you are talking about, you add more information: A girl is talking to Tom. Do you know the girl? You notice there is repetition of "girl". That's why you need to put the repeated word only in the first clause with the help of the Relative Pronoun "Who": Do you know the girl who is talking to Tom?

What are the Relative Pronouns?


Relative Pronoun is a pronoun that introduces a Relative Clause. There are FIVE main Relative Pronouns: People: Who (subject) / Whom (object) Things: Which Possession: Whose For subject/object people & things in Restrictive Relative clauses: That

Types of relative clauses:


* Restrictive Relative Clause: Also called Defining Relative Clause. It gives necessary & essential information to the general meaning of the whole sentence. Restrictive Relative Clauses are NOT put between commas.

The motorcycle which is outside is mine. That machine that on the desk is a printer.

* Non-Restrictive Relative Clause: Also called Non-Defining Relative Clause. It gives only additional information to the main sentence. Non-restrictive relative clauses do not the meaning and they are put between commas.

Example:
Barrack Obama, who is the president of USA, is originally from Africa. My friend Issam, whose mother is an engineer, is the first of the school.
