Solving Multivariable Equations Selected Response Clear Purpose: This formative assessment was developed to assess the knowledge and understanding of key concepts that ninth grade students would need in order to understand, create and solve multivariable equations. The purpose of the assessment is to help the instructor determine if students are understanding the key concepts about creating and solving equations with more than one variable. Another purpose of the formative assessment is to allow students to see how comfortable they are with this material, and in which areas they still need help with. This formative assessment will let the instructor have insight in which areas students are still struggling with and what they can work on in order for the students to be able to understand, create, and solve multivariable equations on their own. Standards: (from the Michigan Merit Curriculum) Standard A1: Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities A1.2 Solutions of Equations and Inequalities A1.2.1 A1.2.8 Targets: Learning Target I can create equations with many unknowns using real life situations. I can solve multivariable equations for each unknown. I can justify the steps I use to find solutions to an equation. Understanding, Creating, and Solving Multivariable Equations


Objective: By completing this assessment we will see how well you understand multivariable equations. We've been working on a few key concepts, such as how to create and solve multivariable equations, and it's time to see how far we've come. We cannot move on to the next unit until you all have a clear understanding on this material. The purpose of this assessment is to see how far we have come in understanding, creating, and solving equations using story problems. Once this assessment is completed we will use it to see if we need to spend more time on this topic or if we have mastered our learning goals and are ready to move on. For this assessment there are two questions: Question 1: Scenario Question Question 2: Prompt Question DIRECTIONS: I would like you to first write your name, date, and hour in the upper right corner of this page. You may have only a pencil and a calculator along with this test on your desk at this time. I am giving you the entire class hour to complete this test. If you need more room to show your work please use the back of your test. Also, please keep your eyes on your own paper, and there is no talking during this class period. Each question is worth 5 points. Please read each question very carefully and show all of your work. There are rubrics for each question provided for you to read and understand what full credit work shows, and what I will be grading you on. Please read each rubric so you get a full understanding of what is expected from each question. Also, do not forget to complete the self reflection page! Don't forget I am here to help, if you have any questions come see me at any time during the test.
