CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.11-12.2b Develop the topic thoroughly by selecting the most significant and relevant facts, extended definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples appropriate to the audiences knowledge of the topic. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.11-12.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 13 above.)

Objective(s): : Students will determine a theme present in a current song and analyze its connection to Transcendentalist themes. Students will write a letter expressing Transcendentalist thoughts, the artists thoughts, and their own thoughts about Individualism. Students will use song lyrics to cite textual evidence to support their claims on how their chosen song connects to Transcendental themes.

Introduction: (10 minutes) - Journals: Students will respond to the following YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikGVWEvUzNM What do you think the video is saying about identity/ individualism? Have you ever felt this way before? Do you think that your mask is on or off?

Application: (10 minutes) - Students will receive lyrics for Lupe Fiascos song The Show Goes On

The class will listen to the song and annotate lyrics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bknVwaz7N6s The class will discuss how Lupe Fiascos song is connected with the Transcendentalist theme of Individualism

Practice: (1 hour) - Students will use their Chromebooks to find an example of a song that is related to Individualism. - They will then write a letter to Melissas future middle school students that: (1) Explains Transcendentalist thought on Individualism (2) What the musician is saying about Individualism (3) Offer advice for the students on how to be an individual and not conform Conclusion: (10 minutes) - Students will share songs they have chosen with their tables
