Stage 2: A Collection of Assessment Evidence

Performance Tasks:
Recycling simulation: What can be recycled in our own community? Other states? Other countries? Students will be exposed to different products in which they will decide which are recyclable and which are not. After learning what Milwaukee recycles, they will make a chart of the items that can be recycled and which would be thrown away. They will then use to internet to research 3 other states and 3 other countries and add onto their chart which items those states recycle/ throw away. The class will then merge all of their charts into a class chart in which the students will compare recycling habits for different states and different countries. Art project applying the concept of reusing Students will gather items they would either recycle or throw away at home. They will then create an art project of their choice by reusing these items. What is the most serious project facing earth? Students will explore this question by constructing a presentation on some of Earths most serious environmental threats, competing for $1 million in funding from the HOW (Help Our World) Foundation. All students are member of the HOW foundation and will vote for which cause should get the funding.

Other Evidence:
1. Letter- Each student will write a letter to a friend explaining what they have learned about reducing, reusing, and recycling. They will include facts and statistics about waste and recycling. They will also propose a plan of action their friend should take to help the environment. 2. Quiz- environmental resources quiz, pollutants quiz 3. Essay- Students will write to explain the impact humans have on their environment. 4. Observations- Students will keep track of their individual actions as well as others actions that are affecting the environment 5. Art- students will create a work of art that conveys their feelings about humans and their impact on environment

Student Self-Assessment and Reflection:

Final essay Questions: 1. What actions are you going to personally take to help the environment and why will it matter? 2. How have you changed over the course of this unit? 3. Specifically, what information from this unit should everyone know about the environment?
