GEOMETRY UNIT PLAN!

! Rationale:

Topic: Geometry

Subject Area: Math

Grade Level: 5th

The principles and skills associated with geometry are used constantly in daily life. For example, construction, cooking, decorating, packing, and travel all include geometric calculations. Also, geometry serves as an entry point into math for students who prefer to think in terms of shapes and pictures instead of numbers. As a result, the geometry unit is critical for engaging students with math, as well as preparing them to make wise and efficient decisions in their day-to-do lives both inside and beyond the walls of the classroom.

! Standards:

Focus Standards:
5.G.1 Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to dene a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the rst number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate).! 5.G.2 Represent real world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the rst quadrant of the coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation.! 5.G.3 Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional gures also belong to all subcategories of that category.! 5.G.4 Classify two-dimensional gures in a hierarchy based on properties.! 5.L.6 Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain specic words and phrases!

Building towards:!
5.SL.6 Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, using formal English when appropriate to task and situation.! PE.05.SM.01 demonstrate safety, rules, procedures, and etiquette to be followed during participation in physical activities.! 5.MD.3 Recognize volume as an attribute of solid gures and understand concepts of volume measurement.! 5.MD.4 Measure volumes by counting unit cubes, using cubic cm, cubic in, cubic ft, and improvised units.! 5.MD.5 Relate volume to the operations of multiplication and addition and solve real world and mathematical problems involving volume.!

! ! ! Unit Focus:

COGNITIVE - Knowledge & Reasoning

Principles: points, lines, line segments, angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, perimeter, area, coordinate graphing, classification of polygons. Know: names and definitions of shapes, organization of a coordinate system, classifications/hierarchy of polygons.

PSYCHOMOTOR Skills & Processes

Calculate perimeter and area, use a coordinate plane to graph real world and mathematical problems, apply geometric understandings to real world planning, designing and calculating, make accurate large scale measurements and calculations, create a project proposal based on geometric calculations.

AFFECTIVE Attitudes and Dispositions

Believe that everybody can be good at math. Understand that they already make accurate geometric calculations in their daily lives. Realize that math can be, and is, fun. Understand that math isnt a compartmentalized subject in school, but rather an important component in living a fun and exciting life. Get excited about using math to accomplish a challenging goal.

GEOMETRY UNIT PLAN! Performance Goals:

1. Given guidance, behind-the-scenes support, instruction, time beyond the geometry unit, necessary resources, and specifically designed group tasks, students will be able to design, calculate, create, present a proposal, and build a wood chip walking trail around the schools property. 2. Given instruction, practice, and time to prepare, students will be able to successfully answer ninety percent of the questions on an electronic post-test that includes multiple choice, short answer, and check all that apply questions.

Overarching Essential Question(s): How is geometry used to improve our daily lives? What rules of geometry can we use to help solve mathematical and real world problems? What are the major patterns in geometry and why do they exist? Day 1 (Thurs) Day 2 (Fri)

Pre-Requisite Skills and Knowledge:

Students will need to have a basic understanding of multiplication, counting, and number sense. They must also be able to use a ruler to draw straight lines. They will need to know how to write basic sentences, follow instructions, navigate a computer, work on assignments that differ from their peers, and work in small groups. An understanding of classroom logistics in regards to homework will also be required. Finally, students will need to be able to accurately measure and record data.
