Lesson Plan: Aztec Literature Compare/ Contrast

Learning Goal Common Core Standards (DPI) Reading Standards for Literature 6-12 1.) Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. 9.) Compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres (e.g., stories and poems; historical novels and fantasy stories) in terms of their approaches to similar themes and topics. Instructional Objective(s) Students will have a better understanding of what a folktale conveys about a culture. Students will be able to analyze key concepts in both literary works and compare/ contrast them. Assessment Large-scale Venn Diagram completed by the class together Class discussion about Venn Diagram Materials Iztaccihuatl story from the Aztecs (attached) Brother Grimms Snow White (attached) Large piece of paper (for Venn Diagram) Construction Paper Markers Scissors Tape

Lesson Plan: Aztec Literature Compare/ Contrast


Time (Total and Specific) Intro to folktales: 10 min. Reading of Literature: 20 minutes Group preparation for Venn Diagram: 20 min Venn Diagram as a class: 10 min Discussion/ Closure: 10 min Total: 1 hour 10 min.

Instructional Procedures:

Greet the class. Review what class has learned about the Aztecs thus far through discussion. Introduction to Folktales with overhead: -What is a folktale? -Why do we have folktales? Explanation/ Instruction for reading literature: -Background on Aztecs Iztaccihuatl and Brother Grimms Snow White Students will read the two pieces of literature in groups. They will be instructed to write the main ideas and details from each folktale on pieces of construction paper. They will also need to write similarities between the two stories. As a class, we will create a large Venn Diagram by taping the individual pieces of construction paper on the Venn Diagram. There will be a discussion during this process about how we are comparing and contrasting. (Assessment) Review what the goals of the assignment were and check for understanding.
