COLOURS OF MALAYSIA
A multicultural nation with diverse customs and beliefs, Malaysia is truly a prosperous nation that still holds its colourful heritage and rich origins dear despite its growing urbanization. Heres a quick look at the fiercely preserved culture and heritage of a wonderful nation. By Irvin Hanni
crafted to appease the spirits of the sea. Originated from Terengganu, it tells the story of a princess, her handmaidens, the fisherman, and the witch doctor. A special ingredient used in the performance is the mayang pinang (palm frond), which is said to help invoke the sea spirits. MUSIC AND DANCE Dikir barat is a more colourful form of Malay choral speaking, coupled with songs, background percussions, hand gestures and Malay poetry. Performed by an enthusiastic group of 10-15 men, it is led by a tukang karut (the head honcho of the group), singing lyrics that touch on current events and politics, everyday life, and social affairs. There are also dances that are unique to certain states or tribes. The Zapin dance, usually associated with the south Malaysia state of Johor, is a fun and upbeat dance number that is accompanied by the music formed by traditional instruments such as the gambus (lute), marwas (bongos) and the violin. Over in Sabah, the Sumazau dance is associated with the Kadazan-dusun tribe, usually performed during the harvest festival. The distinguished features of the Sumazau dance are the slow rhythmic movements of the dancers heels while the hands float gracefully like a bird soaring up the sky.
PERFORMANCE ART One of the most authentic forms of performance art in Malaysia, Mak Yong has been declared as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage to Humanity by UNESCO. Spinning tales of ancient Malay fables for at least 800 years and counting, this dance-drama performance art is performed in a traditional village setting of an open-walled stage constructed of wood and palm leaves. A traditional orchestra takes a side of the stage, where instruments like rebab (three-stringed spiked fiddle), gendang (double headed barrel drums) and tetawak (hanging knob gongs) accompany the performance. Proud to be home of the Mak Yong is Kelantan, a beautiful state in the northeast part of Malaysia dubbed as the cradle of Malay culture. This predominantly Malay state is a gem pool for tourists and visitors to get up close and personal with Malaysias rich and unique heritage. Here in Kelantan, visitors can also catch the famous wayang kulit performance, a traditional shadow play puppet theatre. The backbone of wayang kulit is the Tok Dalang, who controls the puppets whilst telling the stories from local folklore and other worldly tales. Also originating from the east coast is the Ulik Mayang, a ritualistic dance originally

SPECIAL FEATURE
SPORTS AND RECREATION The east coast states are also the birthplaces of the wau, a traditional kite that epitomizes Malaysian culture for generations. Made from bamboo, there are many variations of the wau, such as wau kucing (cat kite), wau merak (peacock kite) and wau jala budi (moral net kite). The most popular form is the wau bulan (moon kite), shaped like the crescent moon and decorated with floral motifs. The wau is played in villages, typically after harvesting season to celebrate the hard work done, as well as a recreational game played by the sea. In the villages, it is also not uncommon to find men playing sepak takraw. Played between two teams of three, the players vie for a small rattan ball that can only be touched by the feet, leg or head. The objective is to keep the rattan ball from falling to the ground on your side. Other popular recreational games include gasing and congkak. Gasing is the spinning top, made by metal and wrapped with strings. For the ladies and children there is the congkak, which consists of a long board and played with marbles. The long board is traditionally carved of teak or mahogany wood into various shapes for the head, like a swan or a dragon. MARTIAL ARTS AND WEAPONRY Silat is a Malay form of martial art, some said to be the most complicated and deadliest. The basic forms of silat are based on jurus (movements made up of strikes, blocks and manoeuvres), bunga (the grace of movements) and tempur (the duel between two pesilats). Though it is mainly practised in the villages and for competition purposes, you can also find silat being performed in weddings and official ceremonies. Complementing silat is the keris, a traditional weapon distinctive to the Southeast Asia region. The wavy blade consists of three parts: bilah,

hulu and warangka. These parts are considered to be highly sought after art forms, with meticulous carvings and details. Keris is often regarded as a weapon as well as a spiritual object. TEXTILES Batik is a popular traditional cloth made by dipping hot wax and lining out the patterns on the cloth (usually silk or cotton). The motifs tend to be flowers, leaves or butterflies. Women wear batik for many occasions from their daily lives in the villages, or when made into pretty baju kurungs or kebayas to be worn during Hari Raya or formal occasions. For the men, batik is considered as the formal wear worn during official events such as weddings and important functions. Songket is also traditionally woven in silk or cotton, embossed with gold, silver or metallic-coloured threads creating a pattern, usually with flora or fauna motifs. The delicate process of weaving songket broken down into eleven steps has made it much more valuable. Depending on the quality of the weave, a songket cloth can be priced at around RM100 for the mass-produced ones, or up to thousands of ringgit for the very delicate threads. The best place to shop for songket is Terengganu, where the best craftsmen of songket are based. Meanwhile in Sarawak, the pua kumbu is traditional cloth that is woven by the Dayak women, used

for important events such as births, funerals and weddings. With more colours than the rainbow As an integral part of the international spice trade many years ago, Malaysia has prided itself in the many traditions and customs of all the visiting traders and travellers, resulting in an interesting amalgamation that help shaped its identity today. Quiet sunset cruises and golden tan on the beachsure that sounds like a holiday but what you really need is something that gets the heart and endorphins racing. Malaysia has adrenalinepumping activities almost everywhere you go, so much so that armies from all over the world have been known to dump their troops in the wild jungles of Borneo (of East Malaysia) for survival tests. For the rest of us, even exploring the tamer parts of the forest gives us a rush or two....but the excitement has just begun. WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE! Whenever a reality series comes to a rainforest, everyone seems to eat well. Probably because theres plenty of wildlife, edible plants and tons of juicy worms to keep you well fed. But the reality of it is you will have to hike mountainous slopes snaked by tree roots the size of your torso while constantly watching out for a charging wild boar. Or avoid being scratched by poisonous vines just so you can proclaim you made it! In the vast wild parks of Taman Negara Pahang,
Endau Rompin National Park and Bako National Park, your limits are testedeither through threading the canopies on 334-metre high suspended bridge or stomping the grounds with guides imparting jungle survival tips. Often, these tours will have you roughing it out like the natives do. Once you are done, you will wear your scrapes and insect bites with pride. Over in Sabah, East Malaysia, adventurers conquer the tallest mountain in Southeast Asia Mount Kinabaluby braving chilly air, high altitude and lack of oxygen, preceded by months of hard training and preparations. But all will be worth it when you welcome breathtaking sunrise at the crack of dawn! ROCK N ROLL If your inner Spider-Man is calling out to you while you shop in the heart of KL, worry not as Damai Wall of Batu Caves is only 30 minutes away. Not only is it convenient but Damai Wall is also the last limestone outcrop in Peninsula Malaysia that will surely satisfy your climbing needs.

Dont be fooled, even seasoned rock climbers would find the 1600m2 roped climbing, 14-metre top-rope, 16-metre lead climbing and 300m2 of bouldering challenging and very close to the real thing. WET AND WILD Everyone loves to swim with the fishes, but the fishes in Malaysia like to swim with you too, that is with the right snack. Inject a little thrill into your dives at Pulau Lang Tengah, Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Layang-Layang or Sipadan Island by swimming with nurse, tiger and hammerhead sharks! Or hike up a notch by going on night dives, popular in Pulau Redang, Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, Mabul and Kapalai. Once done with the sharks speed your way around the amazing islands on jet-skis and head to the skies to dry off as you strap on for a birds eye view by parasail! FLYING FREE If those dont excite you enough, then maybe falling from a 335-metre tall building will. The KL BASE Jump which started at KL Tower has been around since 2001 and attracts quite a following. It organises jump tours around Malaysia that include Menara Alor Setar (Kedah), Menara Komtar (Penang) and Wisma Darul Iman (Terengganu). You must have a certicate of inoculation for yellow fever if youre coming from affected countries. Vaccinations for cholera and small pox are not necessary. Always keep your belongings safely with you while youre out and about. Important documents should be kept in your hotel safety deposit box.
Have loose change handy with you at all times for taxis, buses and trains. Also, when taking a taxi, insist on using the meter. Most importantly, keep hydrating!
Since its a tropical country, ensure that you bring light clothing, comfy shoes, insect repellent and plenty of sunscreen.
Drug dealing and trafcking carry severe punishments. Read here on prohibited items. Gambling is only permitted at Genting Highlands Casino. To drive in Malaysia, youll need an International Drivers Permit (IDP) but it is recommended that you take taxis to move about as it is easier.
Be careful with the authenticity of branded items as bootleg products are widely available. Tipping is not practiced or expected at eateries. Its your prerogative if you do want to tip.
ETIQUETTE
The locals here are particular about etiquette simply because they are from different cultural backgrounds.
When visiting any home and places of worship, its good manners to remove your shoes before entering the premises. Certain places of worship have a dress code, so please follow instructions. Some might not allow photography. Just look out for signage. When passing items (such as money) or pointing directions, it is considered polite to use the right hand. When invited for a dinner, utensils are usually provided but its customary for the Malays and Indians to eat using their right hand. The Chinese usually use chopsticks.

Purchase and consumption of alcohol is limited to patrons over 21 at non-halal establishments. Cigarettes are sold to age 18 and above only. Please look out for NO SMOKING signage, as smoking is prohibited or limited to certain areas in most airports, shopping malls, banks, hospitals, cinema halls and eateries. It is courteous to say thank you at the end of a conversation. Blatant public displays of affection (PDA) are frowned upon.
