Solving Systems of Equations Performance Task and Quiz Review 8th Grade Pre-Algebra TEACHING AND LEARNING OBJECTIVES Big Idea: Showing different ways to communicate mathematical ideas effectively. Essential Questions: Why are graphs helpful? What is equivalence? Desired Results: Students will know and be able to apply their knowledge of rate of change and initial value given a situation and interpret the meaning of the solution to complete their performance task. Students will review previously learned concepts regarding solving systems of equations both by graphing and use of algebra through the substitution method. Language Objective: Slope, rate of change, slope intercept form, y-intercept, substation, coefficient, and variable. ASSESSMENT Performance Task: Teacher Created Formative Assessment

Resources for this lesson: Glencoe Math Course 3 Volume 1 Textbook Smarter Balance Performance Assessment Kuta Software Time allocated for this lesson: 57 minutes total. Classroom management or layout considerations needed for this lesson: Student will complete the performance task individually. When working on review packets, student are allowed to work with a partner to check answers and discuss the process to solve each system of equations. Students will be seated at tables of two to make this partner process easier. LESSON DELIVERY Learning Plan: 1. Performance Task: Class will begin with students working individually on a performance based task. This tasks asks them to apply their knowledge in a real life situation to determine the solution, then to write in words the process they used to solve it. Students have as much time as needed to complete this performance task. 2. Continue Word Problem Worksheet (from yesterday): When finished, students will continue working on their word problems from yesterday either on their own or with a partner. 3. Review Sheets: Students will then work on review sheets on their own or with a partner if they choose. The sheets they will be working on vary depending on what they expressed on their exit ticket yesterday that they need extra practice with before tomorrows quiz.

4. Correct Homework: Once all students have finished the performance task, we will correct homework using an answer key that will be provided to each student. Questions will be address individually, in a small group, or with the entire class depending on need. 5. Continue Review Sheets: Individual instruction provided by the teacher as needed based upon student request. 6. Exit Ticket: With the last 5-10 minutes of class, the class with use white boards and graph paper to answer a 3 question exit ticket involving solving a system of equations by graphing, solving a system of equations using the substitution method, and writing, solving, and interpreting the solution to a system of equations from a word problem. These are the three topics their quiz tomorrow will focus on. 7. Homework: Study for quiz. __________________________________________________________________________________ PERFORMANCE TASK The total cost to ride the XXL thrill ride at the Topsfield Fair consists of the cost of each ride plus the one-time admission to the fair. The cost to ride each time is the same regardless of how many times you go on. Ryan went on 5 times and paid $20.00 Lauren went on 15 times and paid $50.00

Part A: Based on the examples, what is the cost of each time you ride, NOT including the one-time
admission to the fair? Explain how you found your answer.

$____________

Part B: What is the cost of the one-time admission to the fair? Explain how you found your answer. $____________
