Common Core Standards


Reading Literature
1) Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. 2) Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text.

Essential Questions
1. How can we use drama and film to interpret novels and literature?

Writing
3) Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences. 4) Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (Grade-specific expectations for writing types are defined in standards 13 above.) 10) Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.

Students will go in their assigned order and recite their poem. I will score their presentation based on the attached rubric. Students have received this rubric.

Period 4: Ondine/Stargirl

Distribute/explain graphic organizer and film (10 min) o Describe Ondine folk story and Curse of Ondine respiratory disease (back of handout) o Beginning of the film models the play and Stargirl to a certain extent, but the end trails wildly off o As you watch, complete the worksheet to organize the characters and their potential connections to the novel. At the end, we will be taking a creative Ondine based approach to Stargirl Watch film (41 min) o Note to self: skip through 31:19-37:50 Wrap-up o Keep reading Stargirl; work on artifacts, they are due next Wednesday

Continue watching Ondine. Students should continue completing the worksheet. (51 min) Pass out Vocab 3 sentences and definitions due next Monday

Period 6: Stargirl

Finish watching the film (20 min) Share out worksheet (5 min) o What did students write? It is okay to have different character lists. Introduce/begin Dramatic Interpretation (20 min) o Distribute handout o Describe activity: students will be broken up into groups of 4 or 5. In their groups, they must create an alternate story arc that follows the basic pattern of Ondine. Students should flex their creativity, but keep it realistic and within the character profiles. Students will be dramatizing and extending the range of the characters we already know. o Students will explain their story arc and character development to the class, and then explain why they chose to act out the scene they did o Students should create a paragraph long summary of Stargirl 2.0 and a script for a skit, which they will then perform. Skits should be no longer than 5 minutes. You can use scripts! o Students have the rest of this class and next class. Present on Monday. Wrap-up o Finish novel for Tuesday; Vocab 3 due Monday

Work on skits (51 min) o Students have the entire period to work on their story arcs and skits. Next Monday, they should be prepared to share their skits (will probably do something else for the first part of the double period) Wrap-up o Please read through the end of the novel for Tuesday
