AS Media Evaluation

Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Flashback- Narrative Develop We used flashbacks in our thriller opening to develop our narrative. This was to link each of the scenes from present to the past. This was to reveal who the murderer was and who they murdered, because the murderer has the same phone as the victim. We developed the flashback by imbedding short clips and dramatic music to make the flashbacks have more of an impact on the audience. Narrative Develop/challenge In our thriller opening we used certain camera angles and movement to psychologically portray that Caitie is the victim and not the murderer. We also thought Caitie was a good character as it does not portray that Caitie is the murderer as shes a teenage girl and looks innocent. We also psychologically confused the audience by using a certain camera movement called panning. The panning follows Caitie walking down the road, and into the house. We thought using panning was good because it looks like Caitie is being watched by someone. The reason we portrayed this was because we wanted to challenge our thriller opening and our audience to give our thriller opening a twist. We thought this would be effective on our audience because it had reverse psychology and may change emotions of our audience. Sound- Music- Use In our thriller opening we used non-diegetic sound. The reason why we used non diegetic sound was that it gave out more of a thriller vibe. We also used music with no words or singing to make the atmosphere tenser. The music we have so far is dramatic and tension building, we also want to add some light/happier string music over the top of the dark and tense music because make it more bizarre. We got this idea from Insidious where they have tip toe through the tulips in there movie to make the atmosphere stranger. We chose this type of music because we wanted our audience to feel tense, scared and on edge. Mise en scene Use Caities clothing during this thriller opening is typical thriller convention clothing for a murderer. Caities wears dark and thick clothing to portray her as a murderer. W e chose black clothing because the colour black suggests that Caitie may be in a dark place. Also the colour black suggests death, it also suggests power as Caitie is a murderer and has killed this young girl.

Mise en scene- Develop In our thriller opening at the beginning everything starts off dark and when we get into the murderers bedroom. The bedroom is yellow; this colour signifies joy, happiness it could also turn to the negative side and suggest jealously, dishonesty and cowardice. The colour yellow also contradicts itself and the audience may be confused for a couple of seconds and they wont relate the colour yellow with death. Opening Credits/Titles- Develop In our opening shots we decided to use very simple and plain opening credits and titles. We decided on Vrinda font and for the titles and opening credits to be in white. We thought this design was suitable for a thriller as it doesnt give much away. For t he title of our movie C H O S E N we thought double spacing each letter looked good and mysterious. We also decided to turn one letter back to front as that could look like the C H O S E N letter. We decided to use white as the colour because it suggests purity, peace, simplicity and clinical, but when this thriller opening is the complete opposite to what the colour white represents. Newspaper scrap book- Develop For our thriller opening we created a newspaper scrap book. We thought this was a good idea because to make a clear link between Caitie being the murderer. The newspaper scrapbook was also a good idea because its the piece of evidence that confirms to the audience watching the opening that Caitie is the murderer. We developed this idea by linking the flashbacks with this newspaper scrapbook as it can confirm that its the same girl in the newspaper scrapbook thats being murdered on the beach. Camera Angles/Movement- Use In our thriller opening we used a number of camera angles and movement. The camera angles we used were; extreme close up, we used this camera angle on Caities face she was smiling. We used this angle for this shot to show expression on Caites face to show shes a mad woman. We also used extreme close up on the victims face (Hannah) in the flashbacks. We used this because to show Hannah was the girl that has been murdered and her picture is in the newspaper scrapbook. We used two more extreme close ups which were of a phone and a knife. We used the extreme close up of the phone because It was Hannahs phone and now Caitie has it, we used this to show a clear link that Hannah has been murdered. It is the same with the knife we had two shots of the knife; one in the flashback and one in the bedroom, for the exactly same reason to show a clear link that Caitie is the murderer. We used some camera movement; zooming in and out. We used this zooming in and out when the victim (Hannah) had the phone in her hand. We thought this was a good effect because it made it more dramatic and intense.

Props-Use/Develop In our thriller opening we used a newspaper scrapbook and put pictures of the victims that Caitie has murdered in it. In our thriller opening it especially focuses on one victim that has been murdered (Hannah.) In the newspaper scrapbook there is a picture of Hannah, Caitie proceeds to cross Hannah out, and this shows that Caitie has murdered her. She also crosses her out in red pen. We used the red coloured pen because presents death, blood, passion and desire. This could suggest that Caitie has a desire and passion to murder people.
