EDID 6503 Instructional Design Theories, Models and Strategies

Assignment 3

Reflection Paper

Terry Hall ID# 94033128 Post Graduate Diploma in Instructional Design March 26, 2014

Assignment 3 for EDID 6503 is to create an instructional model that will support my work environment. Summarising my work environment is the first task, identifying a model best suited to my work environment the next, then the creation of the new model. The creation of the new model I looked forward to. The attempt to identify an instructional model that shows some resemblance to my work environment proved to be most interesting and challenging at the same time. In order to do this, I realised that I first had to complete a concept map of the design of instruction as it relates to my work environment. I was pleasantly surprised to be able to assign instructional design terminology to the day to day activities in my work environment. Words such as goals, objectives, strategies, evaluation and assessment. This exercise brought some clarity and structure to the instruction design function of my work environment: a structure that I am somewhat surprised exists. Not being a part of the education sector, I have always believed and often make reference to the fact that within my work environment, there is an informal structure with regards to training. Learning environments are everywhere in our everyday lives. With this concept map in hand, comparisons with the existing instructional models became less challenging. There is a wide selection of literature available on instructional design models. Albeit, it was not as easy to identify one that was similar to my work environment. However, I was soon able to narrow my search down to The Gerlach and Ely Design Model which in my opinion best suited my work environment. My research introduced me to instructional models for use in the standard classroom, for distance education and for the design of software used for instruction. Here the impact of the growth and development of technology is very evident. There were some models that were developed for the classroom that have made the transition to incorporate into

the instructional model the presence of technology as it relates to instruction and learning. Having selected The Gerlach and Ely Design Model, I approached the next step which was to now create an instructional model that will provide support for my work environment. Using the concept map as a base alongside the selected model, I was able after many attempts come up with a draft and a name for my newly created model. As the focus and starting point for instruction design in my work environment is the learner, the name L-Central Instructional Model was given to the new model. This model sought more effective learning by adding self-assessment, appraisal, review and reflection strategies to the existing instructional strategies in place. L-Central and The Gerlach and Ely Design Model share similarities and have differences. However, both models provide for a systematic approach to instructional design. The diagrammatic representation of The L-Central model was attempted using the design tools available in Microsoft Word. At this juncture a note to myself is to spend some time to acquaint myself with these design tools. This assignment has enforced the need for proper planning and research for instruction design; a need for structure and for organisation. Technological implications should not be ignored, but should be consumed in the design of instruction. Learning takes place all the time and all around us. It is ongoing and should not be restricted by unknowing individuals to the familiar classroom setting.
