Leonard Gordon Dr. Ryan T. Miller Education 1010-003 17, March, 2014 Chapter 5 Assignment I have really enjoyed this class. Dr. Miller, you have really opened my eyes to what is to come and what to expect when I enter the teaching profession. Before taking your class I thought I had it all figured out and I thought I would do just fine as a teacher. Of course my ultimate goal was to coach football and/or basketball. Teaching was to facilitate the schools needs and my income while advancing and pursuing my coaching goals. While being part of your class I have gained a desire to teach as much as coach and I realize I can make an impact on students as well as athletes through what Im learning in your class. I also find myself using the strategies I am learning when I plan my practices and when I talk to my athletes. I believe Progressivism is what most suits me as a teacher, but I plan to use some Perennialism in my teaching as well. I want to utilize all the different teaching styles and all the tools available to me to be an effective teacher. All students learn in different ways and each student has different needs. When in my classroom I want to be effective as possible, nurture each students desire to learn, and impact as many students as possible. In the Examining Your Beliefs scale my scores where, Perennialism: 17, Essentialism: 13, Progressivism: 19, Social Reconstructionism: 17.

I plan to lecture and have open discussions with a weekly quiz that allows open notes; this is to reward the students who pay attention and take notes. I also plan to do group work and change the groups up often so students can learn to work with all students in our class, keep fairness, and help build community within the classroom. I will grade group work on the leadership in the group, how much the students bring to the group as individuals, and the effort put into the assignment. Most of my classroom planning will focus on Humanism. I want to concentrate on the development of each student. Help reinforce self-esteem and help each student understand their strengths and weaknesses. I want to encourage personal growth and set achievable goals for each student that will support a belief in their own ability as a student and as an individual. My philosophy on teaching is every student deserves a chance. As a teacher I need to use all tools available to me and teach every student to the best of my ability. Each student is an individual and I need to cater to their developmental needs, their basic skills, and their growth as an individual. Im sure teaching can feel like a thankless job at times and can be very stressful but the intrinsic rewards will make it all worth it. Dr. Miller you are a great teacher and its not just me you have affected. I am blessed to have you as a teacher and I feel privileged to part of your class.
