FRANCONIAS RANGE OF TOWNS HAS BEEN INSPIRING CULTURE VULTURES SINCE TIME IMMEMORIAL.
Bratwurst and the Imperial Castle: This is the image that most people hold in their minds eye when they think of Nuremberg. But the Franconian city has a lot more to offer. European history can be sensed at every step. This is in part due to the worldfamous sights like the Imperial Castle, which, in the Middle Ages, was one of the most important royal palaces of the Holy Roman Empire; the historical Old Town; the German National Museum; the Drerhaus in Albrecht Drers former home; the German Railway Museum with a replica of the first German train, the Adler; the Documentation Centre; and the memorial to the Nuremberg Trials. There you can see where the Nuremberg Trials took place as well as a permanent exhibition documenting the trials themselves. The medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, located on the Romantic Road, is the epitome of romantic city trips. The towns location itself, high above the Tauber Valley, is enough to make you want to take a closer look at the medieval town. Erlangen is one of the best-preserved planned baroque towns in Germany. The streets which stand at right angles to one another, the Hugenottenkirche, the Margravial Theatre, the castle and castle gardens, and the Botanical Gardens come together to create an outstanding architectural and historical ensemble. The Erlangen Bergkirchweih believed to be the oldest beer festival in the world is the highlight of the calendar. When Erlangens mayor taps the first barrel of beer on the Thursday before Whitsun, it is said to be the start of the fifth season in Erlangen. With over two thousand listed buildings, Frth has the greatest density of listed buildings in the whole of Bavaria. The architectural history of the clover leaf town can be seen from the heart of the Old Town to the large art nouveau and Grnderzeit urban buildings. The Jewish history, which dates back almost a thousand years, represents a key part of Frths past. Jewish inhabitants provided stimulus after stimulus for the town. The Franconian Jewish Museum provides insights into the life of Jewish citizens.

around since the 16th century. The council of the free imperial city of Nuremberg specified the recipe for bratwurst back in 1313: The sausage must be between seven and nine centimetres in length and must weigh between 20 and 25 grams. Nurembergs rock-cut cellars: The birthplace of the brewing tradition Nothing tastes better with a Nuremberg bratwurst than a smooth beer. Nurem-
bergs long beer tradition has something to suit every taste: lager (Helles), stout (Dunkles) or a real red ale (Rotbier). In a purity law of 1303, the City of Nuremberg Council decreed that only barley and malt could be used in the beer brewing process. The history of beer in Nuremberg can be discovered during a tour of the rock-cut cellars, which run under the city. The tour concludes in the Altstadthof independent brewery at the foot of Nurembergs Imperial Castle. As the first organic brewery in Germany, it has been brewing beer in copper vessels and wooden fermenting vats in line with the old beer laws since it was founded in 1984. Visitors can also experience a little piece of Franconian beer and brewery culture during a tour of the traditional Tucher brewery.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
Regensburg, the 2000-year-old Roman city on the northernmost point on the River Danube is unique in every respect. The numerous examples of Roman and gothic architecture in the historical Old Town remained largely undamaged during World War II, leading Regensburg to be awarded the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. The centuries-old Stone Bridge stands among the masterpieces of European bridge construction. It also represents a picturesque starting point for a walking tour of the city. The view of the almost twenty well-maintained towers, bright houses and archways reveals the southern ambience. The unmistakeable smell of bratwurst from the historical Wurstkuchl mingles with the fresh breeze from the River Danube. The Wurstkuchl is the oldest bratwurst restaurant in the world. Sampling the home-made sausage with sauerkraut and traditional mustard is one of the highlights of Regensburg. Alongside culinary delights, Regensburg also provides a diverse range of cultural offerings. The Regensburger Domspatzen boys choir is celebrated around the world. Important music festivals, such as the Bavarian Jazz Weekend, the Days of Historical Music and the Festival at Thurn & Taxis Palace, provide top-quality entertainment throughout the year. Regensburg is also a modern city Regensburg does not sleep when the sun goes down. Around 25,000 students call the city their home and help to ensure a pulsating nightlife. Be it at traditional restaurants, in pubs, clubs or charming street-side cafs, you can sense the special combination of tradition and modernity on every corner.

Regional preferences shape the diverse beer culture Aying brewery guesthouse is situated in the heart of a typical Upper Bavarian panorama, with meadows spanning to the horizon, interspersed with the odd farmhouse and bulbous spire. Studying the beer menu with its prize-winning specialities is enough to inspire the tastebuds. Germanys highest private brewery in Mittenwald (over 900 metres above sea level) also maintains its traditions. Eight different types of beer, all with a specific character, are brewed in the 200-year-old brewery; including the mildly spiced Karwendel Hell and the light gold, sparkling Werdenfelser Weisse. Bavarias brewers know their craft. They prove this with their creative speciality beers, which they brew in line with the oldest regulation for food production still in force to this day: the Bavarian Purity Law. They use newly cultured or long-forgotten types of aromatic hops, and combine special malts of all shades in the brew. They are even treading new paths when it comes to the brewing procedure and choice of yeast strain that ferments the wort. In this way, they are enriching the traditional assortment of beers, which is already unique, to create new taste experiences.

Germany is at its highest at the very peak of the 2,962-metre Zugspitze. Mountain landscapes typical of Bavaria, with blue lakes, green meadows and alpine huts, span in all directions at the foot of this dramatic backdrop. Gorges up to 150 metres in depth, countless waterfalls, huge fragments of rock and ice demonstrate the unique power of the water. Visitors can also enjoy magical moments at the ghost gorge in Leutasch near Mittenwald: spirits and sprites can be found getting up to mischief here. Two themed trails lead through the wealth of mythical shapes; they feature information boards to explain the myths, geology, flora and fauna of the natural spectacle to visitors.
Bad Reichenhall is situated just before the gates of Salzburg, Mozarts home town. Set amidst the Berchtesgaden Mountains, the spa town is one of the sunniest regions in Bavaria. The mild and tranquil alpine climate acts like a mineral spring. A stroll through the historical Old Town, a visit to the underground salt grotto in the old salt refinery, and the pedestrian zone with its cafs including the Caf Reber with its famous Mozartkugeln chocolate balls is enough to revive the body and soul. Even kings themselves travelled to the Bavarian state spa town. The royal spa gardens were one of the idyllic places to breathe deeply. At the AlpenSole outdoor inhalatoriums graduation house, a

In days gone by, the Staubfall path was a smuggler route into neighbouring Austria. Today it represents one of the most picturesque walks for the whole family. The steep track from Ruhpolding to Heutal takes you along the rolling Staubfall river. It is a wonderful natural spectacle and a truly magical experience to feel the spray from the water cascades gently hit your face as you walk by. Difficulty: Long climbs, easy mountain walk Duration: 2.5 hours (one-way) Character: Themed walk, family tour
Little Canada represents a real gem. The lakes of Ldensee, Mittersee und Weitsee nestle up against each other like pearls on a chain. When crossing the sunny alpine pathways, passing the untouched flora and the crystal-clear mountain becks that are suitable for drinking, walkers will feel like they are one step closer to the white and blue heavens up above. The aroma of hearty alpine Brotzeit snacks mingles with the clear mountain air. Dairy farmers produce cheese, milk and butter by hand. And those who have tried it can confirm: Nothing tastes better after a long walk than a typical, Bavarian Brotzeit in a cosy mountain hut.
