Breanne Rowland Occupation-based Final Reflection

During my time at Touro University Nevada, I have learned that occupation-based practice is essential in the field of occupational therapy. Most of our course work, if not all, is focused on occupational-based interventions that are meaningful to our clients. In my personal opinion, this is the core value of what occupational therapy is all about. As a future therapist, I have learned that it is our duty to help our clients be as independent as possible. With this said, using interventions that motivate and encourage clients to regain independence should be done through occupation-based treatments. Occupation-based practice is one of the core values of occupational therapy and is what gives clients motivation and value. Looking into the future of occupational therapy, we need to move forward and get back to our roots. I have learned through our course work that occupational therapy is an art and science. The art aspect of occupational therapy is the occupations that make individuals so unique and the therapeutic rapport that is built with clients. The science is the research and evidence behind the interventions that are implemented in order to help clients regain independence. Through my time spent at Touro, I have learned that, we as students need to get excited about putting occupation back into the field of occupational therapy. As future therapists, we must be the change agents and teach others that occupation-based treatment is what makes our profession so unique.
