Lesson Agenda The Papal Conclave Lesson: The Election of a New Pope Objective: After a brief discussion about

recent events regarding the election of a new Pope and independent Internet researching, the students will be able to describe the conclave process and compare and contrast a papal conclave to a presidential election. Content Standards: CA. SS. HSAS.CST. 1- Students explain how major events are related to one another in time. CA. SS. HSAS.REP.1- Students frame questions that can be answered by historical research and study. Vocabulary: papal, conclave, election, Pope Materials: Projector, Computer, Prepared Handouts, Whiteboard, Markers, individual student computers, Internet access Into: The teacher will introduce the lesson by introducing the concept of chalk talk. Without talking, the teacher will place a word on the board and hand the marker to the students who will put up connecting words that relate. This will be informational to the teacher as it will gauge the about of prior knowledge that the collective whole possesses. Through: The teacher will then give the students a graphic organizer and directions as to what questions they are to be answering while reading various online articles. The graphic organizer will break down the questions into the following categories: who, what, when, where, why, and how. After a sufficient amount of information is included, the students will engage in a small group discussion about their findings. Beyond: The students will then be given a Venn diagram the compares and contrasts a presidential election to the papal conclave. They will access their prior knowledge to include facts about the process and include new information. Assessment: The teacher will assess student learning by having the students write an informational news article about the process of the papal conclave and its similarities and differences to a presidential election. They will need to cite three facts that came from their research articles.
