Before you practice:

You'll notice that every page includes Chords that are identified by Roman Numerals. For instance: Key: E Major Diatonic Triads

Chord: I

Chord: ii

Notice that the first chord is labeled I and is a capital roman numeral. This means that the chord is a Major Chord. The second chord is labeled ii and is a lower-case roman numeral. This means that the chord is a minor Chord. You'll also see one other type of chord in this chart. It is a diminished chord and is labeled with a small circle. For instance:

Chord: viio

What is a minor key? Actually, there are a number of different types of minor keys, or modes. If you go through the first three chapters of How to Match up chords with any melody as found at: http://www.PlayPianoTODAY.com/mcm you'll find that we explored the concept of modes. The key of a song gets it's designation from the tonic note, or home base note of the song. The mode of that key can be Major or minor, as well as many different exotic modes. (Just ask a jazz guitarist about modes and you'll see their face light up!) In common use, the key of a song combines it's Tonic Note with it's mode. For instance, you would commonly say Key of Bb Major, but if you were being hyper correct, you might say Key of Bb in a Major mode. Although the term minor is a common term in music, it actually is not a complete term. This is because there are a number of different types of minor modes, each slightly different. In this lesson, we are exclusively using the Natural Minor mode. For simplicities sake, I'll simply refer to this as minor. For instance, you'll hear me say: Key of Bb minor We'll explore the concept of the other minor modes in future lessons. Go Practice! David Sprunger PlayPianoTODAY.com
