Question 5.

Create a design chart for stresses at the interior, corner and edge of a slab as a function of the modulus of subgrade reaction given the following parameters. Attach the graph. Slab dimension: 35ft x 14ft x 8in Wheel load: 9000 lb. Tire pressure: 100psi Epcc : 4x106 : 0.15 Modulus of subgrade reaction : 50,100,200,300,400,600,700 pci. Solution:
Slab Dimension(in inches ) Length Breadth Height 420 168 8

Considering IRC recommended formula for computing different stresses. For different values of k i.e. subgrade reaction, values for relative stiffness l is computed and then different types of stresses i.e. interior, corner and edge are computed. Now again find the stresses for different values of relative stiffness.
Load (lb.) 9000 a (m) = h*1.724 (m) = b (m) = k 50 100 200 300 400 500 600 700 Tire Pressure (psi) 100 5.352 13.792 5.080 l 43.228 36.350 30.567 27.620 25.704 24.309 23.226 22.348 Corner Loading 369.739 357.688 342.851 332.630 324.586 317.850 312.001 306.801 Interior Loading 212.789 199.412 186.035 178.210 172.658 168.352 164.833 161.858 Edge Loading 415.252 383.021 351.123 332.644 319.622 309.577 301.408 294.529 Epcc 4000000 0.15

For analysis IRC 58: 1988 formula were used and for different values of the subgrade reaction, the stresses at corner, interior and edge is plotted. From the observed pattern of stresses, it can be seen as corner loading is more critical than interior and edge loading. This emphasizes to consider the corner design as important parameter. Furthermore, the pattern or trend observed for all the stresses were same, i.e. with increase in the subgrade reaction the value of stresses decreases and it happens to follow a trend of parabola.
