Name of Activity: Leadership Learning Community Leadership Skills and Attributes Goal For This Activity: Skill-Sustains Leadership and Contributes to Community My goal for this activity was to create a sophomore learning community that promoted and developed leadership skills in a community environment. Briefly summarize the activity: After going through a freshman leadership program I found myself wondering !"hat#s ne$t%&' (his led to conversations with some classmates and eventually an idea to create the ne$t thing for us to do as sophomores interested in leadership. My friend Alec )reen and I decided to start the !Leadership Learning Community.' "e designed the program with all participating students living together in a residence hall and taking a weekly class. (his was to create community discussion and growth. hat ne! kno!led"e or ideas did you learn by bein" involved in this activity# (he biggest thing I learned from this activity is that making connections and building relationships are huge& Alec and I had a great idea but we needed to convince other people especially staff and administrators since we were only freshman. At first we had trouble gaining support from the Student Success *ffice but after having the right conversation with the right person our troubles we over. I was able to connect with +r. "hittaker who oversees all Student Success ,rograms and share our story and gain his support. -is support in our efforts changed everything. -aving the right idea isn#t enough. .ou need to have to the right people on board. hat kno!led"e or ideas about your leadership skills and attributes did you learn from this activity# "hile working to start the Leadership Learning Community and while acting as a participant I was able to see the impact it had on other student leaders. It had the largest impact on my personal goal to improve my ability to e$ert self-discipline and control over my behavior on a day-to-day basis to

become a better leader by e$ample. (his community created an environment where we can all hold each other accountable along our leadership /ourney.

&o! did the activity impact the community# 'Ans!er if applicable( (his program created a whole new community& As a learning community focused on leadership we wanted service to be a component as well. (he program was designed to encompass a service pro/ect each semester. (he first year in the program we hosted a group of foster children for a -oliday ,arty. &o! did your involvement in the activity impact you 'on a personal level(# (his program impacted me by showing me the difference an idea can make with the right people and the right motivation. Alec and I wanted to create an opportunity that would have a lasting impact. It was the spark to the fire the eventually led me to run for student body president. *ne success leads to the ne$t bigger and better success. hy does this learnin" matter) or !hy is it important# (his e$perience was important because it showed me the value of creating community and taking on challenges as a team. I could#ve tried to accomplish this by myself but by bring along Alec we made a great team that made us accomplish so much more. %n !hat !ays !ill you use !hat you have learned from this activity# 0rom this e$perience I know I will continue to value my relationships. If it was not for my relationship with Alec as well as +r. "hittaker none of this would have ever been possible.
