Mrs. Brown Disclosure Statement Kearns High School English 10 - 3rd Quarter

Hello! As we settle into the New Year, and since I will be taking the class until 4th quarter, I wanted to refresh ourselves on the class rules and go over a couple of other items that may be unique to my teaching style. Following is a brief description of what I hope you will learn during the time that I am here. The ultimate goal and writing project for this quarter is a multi-genre paper (we will go over the details of this new species of writing assessment together if you have written one) that incorporates multiple smaller writing/creative projects and a large informational paper. The central theme of these pieces will be the meaning of the American Experience and its historical and modern affect on minority populations within the United States (thats a big idea, dont worry, well deconstruct it together). We will be reading the play, A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry and other short writing pieces to supplement our understanding. I will be handing out a class schedule for students to follow soon.

Class Rules ! Respect yourself and others. ! Begin your starter as you enter the classroom, not after the bell rings. ! All of Mrs. Parks rules still apply. Cell Phones/Electronics Cell phones and other electronic devices are only allowed when they supplement our learning in the classroom. Cell phones should not be out at any time unless instructed otherwise. If they are out at inappropriate times, I will take them as per Granite School District Policy. We will be using the class set of iPods to supplement our learning. Refer to the Kearns High School iPod use policy for any questions about their use.

! No headphones or earbuds. ! ! ! ! !

Canvas We will be using Canvas heavily this year to submit assignments, review class content and to participate in online discussions. You can access Canvas on your iPod, in the library or on your home computer. All assignments for the multi-genre paper will be listed on Canvas.

Materials Students are required to be prepared to learn. All students should have the following materials before the start of class: ! Pen/Pencil ! Paper ! Folder for handouts ! Journal Notebook (these are new, well talk about them)

Homework Homework is due at the beginning of the class period. Students who are absent on the day an assignment is given will need to make arrangements with the teacher within three days to make up the work. Students who have an excused absence on the day an assignment is due will have until the next school day they are present to turn in their work. Scheduled tests must be made up upon the students return. It is the responsibility of the student to go to find out what work they have missed. All turned in work must include your name, date and period so credit will be recorded correctly.

Extra Credit With the exception of the hall pass extra credit, all other extra credit will only be available if ALL assignments are turned in for the quarter. Late Work All late work will be accepted and reduced 10% for each day it is late. It is the students responsibility to communicate any problems or unusual circumstances with me BEFORE assignments are due. Late work will be accepted for up to 2 weeks past the original due date. Grading Policy All grades will be based on the following scale: A 90% - 100% B 80% - 89% C 70% - 79% D 60% - 69% F Below 60%
