Alan Rodriguez Mark Welsh History 1700 November, 30 , 2013 Dueling Document: Here in the great article it had

amazing accurate information on about the SpanishAmerican War, . It states that after the declaration of war against Spain in April 1898, the first battle was fought in the Philippines and the Spaniards troops that were led by Patricio Montojo were destroyed. After that the US did not have the men to capture Manila until more troops came in July to help and finish the Spaniards in the Philippines. That is one of the great things in our history, the way the US always comes in and tries to help countries when they are being treated unfairly, we have the tendency to be the worlds police.

The real war did not start till they got to Cuba, and that is where things got a little more intense and interesting. The Spaniards must of known that they were not going to be successful in the war but they fought anyway for pride and honor. The United States troops took over Guantanamo bay and fought a battle in Santiago Cuba and the battle of San Juan was the most important in the war because it played a large role in the unconditional surrender of the Spaniards.

At this time of the war the Cubans were at war and wanted their independence from Spain, they ran riots and had their own soldiers to combat the Spaniards, but the United States went in and helped during this time of need and distress. As a result there was a

treaty signed by the United States and Spain called the treaty of Paris. Cuba did end up getting their independence and the United States got Guam, Puerto Rico from the Spaniards and they released the Philippines and gave them independence as well. This gave the US not only all of those territories but gave them a way to be closer to Cuba that will later be in conflict with the US.

The article was great on telling the dates of these battles and incidents that went on during the battle, it was all accurate and did fill in some blanks for me from class and gave me a better understanding and made me get the big picture.
