Project Information
One-sentence Summary of Project (limit to 200 characters or less): Based on the new Bellevue School District initiatives, Highland Middle School is striving to enhance parent involvement, and the social/emotional development of its students. This grant money would allow for Highland Middle School to purchase 24 parent involvement and education books from Amazon.com to create a resource library for parents in Highlands Family Connection Center. These books address issues such as; promoting success in education for tweens and teens, positive discipline solutions, promoting cyber safety, achieving success for difficult children, coping strategies for children during divorce, etc. Five books would be available in Spanish. Book recommendations came from the 2014 Active Parenting Publishers resource guide. Additionally, six therapeutic games, and two small group guidance books would be purchased for use by Highlands counselors/staff to work individually and/or in small groups with students. These games and small group guidance curriculum promote self-esteem, communication skills, anger management, dealing with separation and divorce, teaching listening skills and self-expression, and anti-bullying strategies. The resource library is to encourage family engagement to support children in their academic and social/emotional needs during the young adolescent years. Staff Lead Commitment: I agree to comply with the grant guidelines and reporting requirements.

Project Proposal
1. Project Description. Describe your project, including how students will be involved and how the project enhances their educational experience.

Highland Middle School requests $496.34 to establish a parent resource library in the Family Connection Center, as well as resources for the counseling center. The resource library will be available for use by all Highland parents. The library will offer a variety of support materials ranging from issues such as cyber safety, positive discipline for children, and additional child development books about the adolescent/tween years. Five books will be offered in Spanish for our Spanish speaking families. Furthermore, manuals on guidance activities and therapeutic games will be purchased for use in the Highland Counseling Center. These will offer academic and social/emotional support for students at the individual and group level. If this grant is awarded, this will increase access to parenting resources to families, and skill building resources for students for counselors to implement. Additionally, the books will be purchased through Amazon.com through the Bellevue School Foundations website, with 8% of the purchase coming back to the foundation to support all Bellevue School District Students.
2. Student Outcomes. List and describe specific student skills, abilities, or behaviors expected to result from this project.

Engaging parents in their childs education is a key indicator of a childs future academic and personal success. Evidence suggests that children whose parents are consistently involved in their education are shown to achieve more, regardless of socioeconomic status, ethnic background, or the parents education level. Students have higher grades and test scores, better attendance, and complete homework more consistently. Furthermore, student behaviors such as alcohol use, violence, and anti-social behavior decrease as parent involvement increases. The combination of new parent resources and counseling center resources will also assist in students further developing certain social and emotional competencies. These competencies include self-awareness and self-management skills to achieve school and life success, social and interpersonal skills, decision making skills, and demonstration of responsible behaviors in personal, school, and community contexts. Behaviors can be measured by evaluating the rate of Highlands discipline referrals. Academic success can be measure by reviewing student grades and test scores.
3. Describe in detail any pre- and post-activities. Include how you intend to prepare your students and how you will follow up.

We will promote the parent resource library through an information campaign. This includes teaming with the family liaison at Highland to promote the family resource library by word of mouth, sending out information about location, hours, and checkout process of the library in a parent newsletter, and adding the information about the library to Highlands school website. We also have the support from Highlands PTSA to
4

promote and provide information about the resource library in the PTSA newsletter and on the PTSA website.
4. Describe how you will evaluate the success of the project and the assessment criteria to be used.

A comment and/or suggestion box will be left by the resource library for recommendations by parents of topics they are interested in for future purchases/donations of books to expand the library. A check in and check out binder will also be present at the library which will measure the books that have been checked out the most, which will guide us in identifying areas of most need for obtaining further parent/student resources.
5. Project Timeline. Include a brief timeline for this project and anticipated completion date.

Once the grant money is awarded, the books, games, and guidance curriculum will immediately be purchased and arranged in the Family Connection Center and counseling office. This will be an ongoing project, and we anticipate future purchases and donations to be made to expand the library. The library will be maintained by conducting a quarterly inventory of the books to evaluate condition, frequency of use, and also to follow up on any books that have yet to be returned.
6. List at least two ways in which you intend to acknowledge Bellevue Schools Foundation funding for this project.

Highland will acknowledge the Bellevue Schools Foundation in the school and PTSA newsletter. Additionally, the parent resource library will have a sign that would state the books were provided by the Bellevue Schools Foundation, and BSF stickers placed in each book. Furthermore, any additional printed material that mentions the parent resource library and counseling resources would acknowledge it was provided by the Bellevue Schools Foundation.

Project Budget
Include itemized costs for this project in the table provided. If using outside resources, attach cost documentation (program brochure and cost, equipment price list, etc.). Be sure to include the name of businesses that will be contracted. Include expenses necessary for the project even if you do not intend to have Bellevue Schools Foundation pay for them. NEW!
